In Loving Memory
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved parents, Iris and Hubert Grew, who left this world together on September 22nd, 2024, just a few days shy of their 75th wedding anniversary, October 1st. Their love was a beacon of joy, commitment, and partnership.
Iris (nee) Thornton was born on February 8, 1928, in England. An avid and talented bridge player, Iris found joy and camaraderie in the many games she played with friends throughout her life. Her love of the game was matched only by her love for her family, who she cherished deeply.
Hubert (Herb) Grew was born on April 17, 1928, in Scotland. He served two years in the British Army where he began his trade as an auto mechanic. He worked in the automotive industry as a Service Manager for his working life and retired at the age of fifty-five. Herb was proud to sing in the Victoria police choir, sharing his voice with the community. Together with Iris, he shared a love of tennis, and the two competed, at the age of seventy, in the Senior Games, where they earned both silver and gold medals-symbols of their dedication and teamwork.
Married in 1949, they emigrated to Canada in that same year. In 1963 they vacationed in Victoria and fell in love with it, reminding them very much of England. They promptly sold their home in Belville, Ontario and drove across the country with their (then) three children.
Always in or near the water, the family spent many, many wonderful years visiting Shawnigan Lake and many of the beaches on Vancouver Island. Summer vacations would often be camping up and down the Island. They provided a wholesome and nurturing environment for their children. They were excellent role models.
Inseparable, their joint interests included singing (they had a song for everything) and were known to burst into song frequently. They were members of the Gordon Head Lawn Bowling Club for twenty years and have their names on many trophies. They enjoyed ball room dancing and would often receive compliments from other dancers at how smooth and fluid their moves were.
They are survived by their children, Michael (Dana), Christopher (Maria), Jaine (Scott) and Keith (Cathy), their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Though they have left this world, Iris and Hubert are together, as they always were, their love a lasting source of inspiration to all who were blessed to know them.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no service. They will be cremated, and their ashes scattered on beaches around Vancouver Island and Shawnigan Lake.

Sincere condolences on the passing of your parents. Iris was my mum´s dear friend from school in Shipley. Mum and Iris exchanged letters (which I probably still have somewhere) every Christmas. Following my mum´s death, my father took over the letter writing. He visited your parents in Vancouver in the 90s. I last saw Iris and Hubert when they visited my dad here at my house, probably in 2000 or 2001. Iris and Hubert were such lovely people who were so welcoming. My parents were Jack and Audrey Holdsworth.

Dear Keith and family,

Peter and I are deeply sorry to hear about the loss of both of your parents. They sound like remarkable people, and it seems they´ve passed their wonderful qualities on to you. We still enjoy our memories of running the island relay with you, and over the past few years you've been a teacher to both of our grandchildren.

Please know that our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Warm regards,

Mary and Peter Freeman

Jaine and family. Condolences on the loss of your parents. While I never met your mom, I did meet your father on a few occasions, when our family car would go in for servicing. Such a lovely man, for which my own father spoke highly of. The beauty of your mom, shines through in you Jaine and always will. Take care.
