Jack Harper Obituary

HARPER, Jack
February 3, 1949 - July 4, 2024

Jack passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, in his home, and on his own terms.

Born in Victoria, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Fran, children Evan and Justine and brother Jim (Laura).

Jack worked as a driver for BC Transit for 30 years while also being a strong advocate for drivers' health and safety through his union and employee assistance program work.

Jack was always happiest on the water and one of his early jobs as ferry captain on James Island and his many years spent racing sailboats were some of his best memories.

His hobbies included birding, reading and photography and he volunteered during many of his retirement years in the gardens at Government House.

Many happy family vacations were spent at Qualicum Beach and later on Pender Island. One of Jack's many retirement projects was to build a gazebo, christened the Jack Shack, that was the scene of many family and friends' gatherings including his and Fran's 50th anniversary party last year.

Travelling was also a great love, especially several longstay vacations that he and Fran spent with family and friends in the south of France and Portugal.

Jack will be greatly missed by his loving family and good friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

I am sad and shocked to read this just now, Fran (and Jim). My sincere condolences. I remember Jack as larger than life and such a great guy from all those years ago...adventures were had!

Sorry to hear of Jack's passing. We had a lot of fun together and I will
always remember him fondly. He was a gentle big guy who liked to laugh.

Gosh, we're sorry to learn of Jack's passing. He was my secret crush in grade 8 & 9 (as he was for 90% of the girls in class and band) and I was devastated when he flew off to Vic High for grade 10. I hosted a few parties, hoping to stay in touch, but it wasn't meant to be. I saw his 25th wedding anniversary picture in the newspaper, and smiled so broadly at those teenage memories. Band trips were such a thrill (I might get to sit next to him in the back of the bus!) He played a mean snare, and my twin Edith played the bass drum. Me...I played a BFlat/EFlat/Alto clarinet, depending which year. Jack was such a handsome good-natured young lad who turned into a handsome senior, too, by the look of the picture! Jack sat in front of me in homeroom with Mrs. Clark. 1963-64. I'm posting a couple of pics, in his honour. He's easy to spot! Our thoughts are with his wife and family. We're so sad for your loss. I am hoping I have the right Jack Harper. If so, I knew Jack, Jim and Laura from Metropolitan church when we all attended youth groups together. Miss B, Ginger, George Pringle Camp, pancake breakfasts...lots of laughter, teenage fun and great friendships. Once we finished school and scattered to follow our life paths, I never saw them again, but the memories are still strong of the fun we had during those early teenage years. I still have a picture somewhere of Jim and Jack dressed in drag for one of the hilarious camp skits. Good times. Good memories. It sounds like Jack had a lovely life adding so many more good memories with more friends and family.
