Jack McCaugherty Obituary

Jack McCaugherty passed away of natural causes at the Nanaimo General Hospital, after almost 98 full years of life. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Brenda, who passed away in 2014 at 92 years of age.

Jack was born in Bassano Alberta, on April 19, 1920. By age 14 he knew he wanted to be a newspaper man and by age 15, through his own initiative, began to write for local newspapers on a "pro-bono" basis. After graduating high school he went to work for his father in the grain business, as times were tough and jobs were scarce. It wasn't until after several years of failed attempts to land a job as a newspaper reporter, that he realized that he would require a university degree to do what he wanted. As life often goes, however, the second world war intervened and his dream of becoming a newspaper reporter was put on hold. With the war over, Jack was able to fulfil his passion by attending UBC for two years, followed by a stint at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree in 1949.

Hired immediately by the Vancouver Daily Province newspaper in Vancouver, he enjoyed 19 years as a reporter, acting editor and by-line columnist. He also took a stint as the president of the Newspaper Guild.

After leaving the Vancouver Province, he went on to work for the largest public relations consulting firm in Vancouver at the time and retired in 1984 as a senior vice-president.

After retirement Jack and Brenda moved from Burnaby to Arbutus Ridge on Vancouver Island in 1987, where Jack was able to pursue another major passion, golf. Both Jack and Brenda were able to golf into their late eighties, making golf their longest "career" in the end.

Jack is survived by his children, Jacqueline, Bill and Ken, as well as his loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jack will be missed but not forgotten.

A celebration of life for both Jack and Brenda will be held at the Empress Hotel Library Room on Sunday April 8th from noon to 2 pm.
