James Dooner Obituary

DOONER, Dr. James
July 26, 1951 - December 31, 2024
M.D., F.R.C.S.(c), F.A.C.S., MBA
Jim passed away suddenly while skiing at Sun Peaks, his favourite home away from home. He is survived by his family that he loved so much, wife Sheree, son Andrew (Andrea and grandchildren Sophie and Noah), son Ian (Jill), daughter Caryn, sisters Marg, Anne and Trina and their families, brothers-in-law Lorne Bulmer and Sepp Poetsch and their families.
Jim was born in Renfrew Scotland and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1954. He was raised on the Niagara Peninsula, attended Medical School at the University of Western Ontario graduating in 1976 then came west to UBC for his General Surgery residency graduating in 1981. Despite moving west Jim remained an avid Maple Leafs fan. In 1982 he moved to Victoria to start his surgical practice. He received his Fellowship in Vascular Surgery in 1984. Jim loved being a surgeon using his skills to help people and eagerly learned any new techniques and technology that would help his patients have a better outcome.
He embraced retirement in 2016 continuing his passion for physical activity with sculling, kayaking, cycling and snow skiing, often more than one of those in a day. In retirement he was able to pursue music, singing and playing guitar and keyboard. Jim loved Open Mics and 2024 he got a busking licence for Dublin, Ireland and played several times along Grafton Street, something that he had wanted to do for a long time.
We would like to thank the Sun Host and all the rescue personnel at Sun Peaks, the ambulance crew and the staffs of Emergency and ICU at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops for their professionalism, help and kindness to Jim and our family.
Jim was able to be an organ donor, something he felt very strongly about, and our heartfelt thanks go to the BC Transplant team that were able to fulfill Jim's final request.
A Celebration of Life will be held in July at our home in Victoria. If you wish, donations may be made to Adaptive Sports Sun Peaks.

We would like to send our sincere condolences to Sheree and the entire family. Jim was always so kind to the staff at the hospital, plus we got to know him on a personal level at the park when his boys played baseball. We only heard of Jim's passing today, apparently a day short of attending his celebration of life. He will be missed and rememberedby many. R.I.P. Jim.

I met Jim in 1989 when he worked in ICU then radiology. He was always approachable and willing to try ways of improving care for his patients. I had the pleasure of having Jim as my physician partner. He was open to good discussion and at times a reprimanding to change his attitude! He will be truly missed! I loved how he lived a full life!

As a former patient of Dr. Dooner, I had the privilege of experiencing his exceptional skill as a vascular surgeon firsthand. I was under his capable care several times, and he always demonstrated a unique and compassionate bedside manner, even with a stubborn patient like me. He will truly be missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to you and your family during this difficult time.

This is so tragic. Jim was a mentor and friend to me during my career. He was a preceptor during my internship and helped me when I started my practice. We played hockey and tennis together and he was always someone I could turn to for advice. My mom liked him so much that she baked him a pie, which was a big deal.
Jim will be missed. My sincere condolences. A great man.
