Janet Bell Obituary

BELL, Janet Elizabeth September 5, 1935 September 6, 2008 Died peacefully after a long and happy life. Predeceased by her loving husband Peter, her brothers Gerald, Jeffery, Howard and sister Clare. Janet is survived by her precious daughter Elizabeth, devoted son and wife Russell, Dana and beautiful Natalie, loving sister-in-law and nephew Mary and Tom, dear friends Les and Joan, family and friends in England and Canada. Janet was born in Monmouthshire and educated at Derby Diocesan College and the I.M. Marsh College of Physical Education. Janet taught in schools in England and Canada. She finally trained teachers at Redlands Diocesan College, Bristol. In 1967 Janet came to Victoria to marry Peter and attend St. Georges Church which became her spiritual home. Her good organizational leadership skills were clearly demonstrated in the many roles she undertook. Janet was deeply concerned about education and was actively involved with other parents in enriching the lives of the students in all the schools her children attended. Janet was an enthusiastic participant in the Jane Austen Society, The Goward House and the Monarchist Society. She was a keen gardener, a gifted flower arranger and a voracious reader. It is for her hospitality that she will be remembered. Her annual garden parties were a gathering place for all her friends. Janet touched many people's lives with her generosity of spirit, her kindness and her deep abiding faith. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, and a compassionate and faithful friend. We invite you to celebrate Janet's life at a memorial service at St. George the Martyr Church, Cadboro Bay, Friday September 12 at 1 pm. Flowers welcome or donations to BC Cancer Society or Victoria Hospice. 498113

Liz, Russell, Dana and Natalie - my condolences on your loss. I have so many fond memories of you mother (grandmother) but the first thing that comes to mind when I picture her is an image of her wearing a hat. For any occasion she would always be wearing the perfect hat. I loved going your family home on Hobbs for Boxing Day and was always comfortable having a quick visit with your Mum and Dad before Liz and I would head out on one adventure or another. Visits back to Victoria just won’t be the same. She’ll be missed.

It is a great privilege to have known Janet. I will always remember this gracious, beautiful, Godly woman. Her spirit will always remain a part of the Parish of St. George the Martyr, Cadboro Bay. I will see her in my mind's eye whenever I look around the church which she loved. And this Sunday, as we sing a special song of tribute to her our voices will be raised in remembrance of one we all loved.

I was privileged to spend a summer at Janet and Peters just over 10 years ago. They looked after me, while I was trying to get a job being over from the UK for the summer, and they expected nothing in return.

Janet was a wonderful woman, kind, friendly and helpful. She made me feel like one of the family and I will always remember my time in Victoria with fondness.

We have remained in good contact since my time in Canada. I always enjoyed reading her letters, on the latest news from the family, written so beautifully.

She will be missed by many.

Janet Bell taught me when I was a student at Redland College. We have kept in touch over 40 years and the joy of her messages full of her interest in others, her family, her church and garden will be sadly missed at Christmas.

Janet and I taught together in Bristol, England, in the mid 1960s. She was a great friend to me then and remained a faithful penpal all the years she lived in Victoria. I shall always remember her with much affection. With love and prayers for you all.

Dear Elizabeth, Russell and family,
My heartfelt condolences to you at this time. My most vivid memories of your mother are from 35 years ago in the St. Georges Church Hall where as Brown Owl, she devoted her time to guiding her young Brownies and teaching us many important life skills. I am sure she will be fondly remembered by many Fairies, Pixies, Gnomes & Elves.
With warm regards,
