MAXWELL, Jennifer Cicily
August 17, 1951 - April 26, 2025
Jenny was born in Victoria, B.C. on August 17th, 1951, the youngest daughter of Philip Pemberton Holmes and Joan Isabella Holmes (nee Douglas). She passed away from complications arising from lung cancer on April 26th, 2025 in NRGH.
Jenny is survived by her husband of 38 years Ian Maxwell; daughter Hannah Chesher (Ernest); grandson Harley Chesher; and son James Maxwell (Haley). Jenny has two sisters, Diana Holmes (Lary Hanson) and Susan McDonald; nieces Heather McDonald (grandnephew Royal and grandniece Cora) and Gillian Harvey (Tristan) (grandniece Natalie). She is also lovingly remembered by her life-long best friend, Denise Young.
Growing up in Victoria, Jenny moved up to Nanaimo in her mid-twenties after the birth of her daughter Hannah. The majority of her work life was spent at B.C. Ferries, starting on the ships, and ending up as the administrative assistant to the manager of the Duke Point ferry terminal. There she made life-long friends and colleagues, many of whom she remained in touch with. She married Ian Maxwell on May 31, 1986 in a lovely ceremony held at the Newcastle Island pavilion, the first such event ever recorded there. They departed the island in the family car, carried on a small motor barge, to begin their honeymoon. Son James was born in Nanaimo a couple years later.
Jenny enjoyed much that life had to offer. She was a fan of the great outdoors, and a natural at sports, figure skating as a child, then later horseback riding, skiing and sailing. She loved animals, having numerous pets over the years. Her Gran's cottage at Maltby Lake in Saanich was a favorite place to stay to 'get away from it all', relaxing, reading, preparing great meals and visiting with family and friends. Jenny enjoyed special holiday traditions and ceremony. A loving wife and mother, she was gentle, kind and generous to everyone, and will remain in our hearts forever.
A service to celebrate Jen's life will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 100 Chapel Street in Nanaimo, on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 1:00 pm.
