Jessica HUTCHINGS Obituary

Jessica Ann Hutchings (1977-2022) passed away on Dec 15 after an all too brief struggle with an aggressive and untreatable cancer.
Her early and sudden loss is deeply felt by her family and a world-wide network of close friends.

Jessica grew up in North Saanich, and loved the wild and beautiful places on Vancouver Island. Travels further afield, and universities in Montreal and Kingston fuelled her passion for history and art, and she spent her last five years as a self-employed editor, moving around and living in the great cities of Europe.

Jess was a non conformist, a free spirit who was often happiest alone, but she carried her family and a circle of close friends with her always and corresponded with them regularly, and beautifully.

Jess leaves behind her mother and father, Pat and John, her sister Claire, cherished nephew and niece, Finn and Charlotte, her extended family, Jim, Ann and Kate Gower, and other much loved relatives. The treasure of her life and her unique, joyous presence will not be forgotten, or replaced.

While no funeral is planned, by request, we will remember and celebrate her life together in the coming months. Those who may wish to record and share photos and memories of Jessica are welcome to do so at www.kudoboard.com/boards/JXLx37Od

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Jessica. I have not seen her in decades and only knew her during her dancing days, but she was someone I admired greatly. She was a beautiful person and a truly gifted dancer.

I echo the words written by Jessica´s sister Claire.
I was thrilled to have Jess visit in 2018. I hadn´t seen her for many years and didn´t know what to expect but I was excited to meet her again. I´d sent her meticulous details of how to get here, I bet that made her smile as I hadn´t figured that this lady was a well-seasoned traveller, who simply didn´t need my careful instructions on how to find us!
When she arrived, she exuded this huge life spirit - energetic, carefree and kind, with an easy sense of humour, she simply lit up the room. Jess opted to stay in our caravan and insisted it was cosy enough for a winters visit!? Amos and Danny took her on a hike to St Abbs Head - a rugged coastline right on the edge of huge rocky cliffs - she returned delighted with her visit.
We stayed in touch and Jess´s emails were an absolute pleasure to receive.
We visited Paris and arranged to meet Jess at Gare du Lyon; Jess was the perfect guide and took us to some hidden gems - the Promenade Plantée, a magical and beautiful place. Next, we visited Place des Vosges where Jess insisted she would stay with Poppy and Joseph at the park while we did a little sightseeing - they were delighted that Jess taught them a little French so they could chat with the other kids! The kids took to Jess immediately.
Jess´s charming way with words was a joy... I used to tell her there was a book in her.
I have a photo of a young Jess taken in Canada when gran Masters visited - I promised to find it and send it to her. I drew that picture of her when I was still at school for my art class. Well, here it is Jess, even then as a child you were a free spirit.
I am forever grateful that Jess reached out and reconnected with me in later life, I felt a strong family connection with her.
Happy Birthday Jess. Cherished memories and much love to all your family and friends.
