Joan MITCHELL Obituary
Joan passed away in Victoria on December 19, 2021.
Joan was born in Regina, June 4, 1930, the daughter of Frederick and Mary Moore. She attended public school in Regina before moving with her parents to Swift Current, where she completed her public school education at Swift Current Collegiate. After high school graduation she attended the University of Saskatchewan, from which she received her B.A., followed by a year at the University of Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor of Librarianship. She travelled with her father after her graduation, spending a year in England and Europe, before taking position in the British Columbia Legislative Library.
After her marriage to James Mitchell in 1964, she joined the staff of the British Columbia Public Library Commission's Victoria branch, from which she retired in 1985 as Branch Head. She was a member of the executive boards of the British Columbia Library Association and the Institute of Victoria Librarians.
Joan was a long-time member of the University Women's Club, receiving her sixty-year membership award in 2006; she was a member of the executive board and served as secretary and treasurer of the Bursary Committee. She was also active with the Girl Guides, serving as Captain of the James Bay troop for a number of years. She was a member of the St. Mary's Church Women's Guild and also a long-time parishioner of St. Barnabas Church.
Joan was predeceased by her husband James Mitchell in 2013.
