John ANDERSON Obituary

John died peacefully at home in Sidney after a courageous battle with cancer.

John was born and raised in Victoria, the third son of four boys born to Murray and Marjorie Anderson. Here he met and married his high school sweetheart Judith (Norris).

He is sadly missed by Judith, daughters Marie and Lynne, son Brian (Jill), grandchild Reigen, brother Ron (Nancy), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Fred and Art.

John had a 32-year career in education as a teacher, counsellor, and school administrator. He started his career in Trail, later moving to Victoria and the Comox Valley. He was vice principal of GP Vanier Secondary School in Courtenay for 13 years prior to his final assignment as the charter principal of the North Island Regional Correspondence School (now Navigate - NIDES). He was well respected for his forthright manner, his integrity, his work ethic, and his genuine care for students and colleagues.

While in Courtenay John and Judy and their three children enjoyed many adventures on their 10 acre hobby farm which they shared with milk cows, beef cattle, chickens, pigs, and dogs.

After John retired, he and Judy moved to Deep Cove on the Saanich Peninsula where they spent 30 happy years. When they were not travelling, John enjoyed the fellowship of his friends at the Ardmore Golf Course. He contributed to the community in several volunteer roles including two summers as a visitor information counsellor for the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, and 25 years with Beacon Community Services preparing income taxes, volunteering as a driver, and as a visitor and personal advocate. He served on the Beacon board, and was chair 2003-2005.

A special thank you to Dr. Michelle Ferguson, Dr. Daniel Lei, Dr. Jane Henderson, and nurse Sarah McLaren for going above and beyond to help John. Also, to the amazing caregivers at the BC Cancer Clinic and the Peninsula Community Health Clinic home care nurses who visited daily.

At John's request there will be no service.

I fondly remember John who was a colleague of my husband´s at Mt. Doug when we first came from Britain. As a family, we also knew John and Judy and kids when they lived in Courtenay. He will be greatly missed.

With the passing of John Anderson, we lost a wonderful human being. John always gave more than he took - even at his monthly poker games, I´m told. He was always more interested in what others were doing than himself and was always the first one to volunteer, including preparing income tax forms for people at the Shoal Centre, filling many executive committee positions at Ardmore Golf Course and in his strata community. When I became ill, he helped my wife with the sale of our RV and moving issues.
You couldn´t ask for a better friend or golf buddy. Rest in peace, John. I hope the greens are easier to read up there.

My sincere condolences. I remember John as a good friend of Pud, his fellow teacher and poker player.
