John Booth Obituary

BOOTH, John Reginald Age 80 of Victoria, BC passed away suddenly on Monday, April 8, 2019. He died at his home of 51 years, doing what he loved - tinkering in his shop. John's passing leaves an immense hole in our family, with his friends, and in the many communities in which he embedded himself. He was loved by all for his kindness, generosity and incredible talent which he shared so freely. John was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on September 5, 1938. As a boy, he grew up on the family farm, rode a horse to school and drove (and fixed) tractors and other machines. His family moved to Victoria when John was a teenager; he attended Victoria High School and later met "his girl", Valerie. The farm boy never left him, but the west coast was where his heart was. John loved the water. He loved sailing, fishing, crabbing and watching the waves and wind from the perch of their Fairfield home. He loved the community on the water too - the activities they did together, and the stories that they shared afterwards and for years to come. And with each story, the wind was stronger, the waves bigger, or the fish even bigger still. John also loved his work and he wove his life around it. He was a builder; an inventor; a person that could make anything; a mechanical genius. He loved deconstructing and fixing things too - especially engines and motors. He enjoyed fixing old motors just as much as he liked complaining about them. It was the same for old vehicles. He always did so with great determination and respect for what someone else had built. His car and truck memories (fixing or driving) were some of his most repetitious and beloved stories to share. More than anything else, John loved his family and friends. His home and shop were homes to many and the doors were always open. He would be there in a heartbeat if anyone needed a hand, or if anyone was offering a beer or a coffee. He loved a party, an impromptu visit or a quick phone call. He appreciated everyone just as they were and never expected anything more of them. He only ever cared if someone was a good person; this was all that was important to him in determining friendship. John also loved the simple things: a favourable wind, peanut butter, a cold beer, old vehicles, his favourite chair, a good story, a good laugh, a new place to explore, a "good deal", an ice cream cone, a project (his or someone else's). John is survived by his daughters, Alison (Kerry) and Jackie (Trevor); his five grandchildren Shayna, Ashlyn, Maguire, Kale and Saul; his brother-in-law Brian; sister-in-law Heidi and nephews Alan, Stuart and Jeff. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, April 24th at 1PM at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers or donations, and in the spirit of John, please be kind and lend a hand to someone that needs it.

My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of John. He will be dearly missed. He was such a quality person who gave his time and energy to many. Knowing John made me a better person.

We met in 1971 in Victoria at a very windy sailing regatta, PIYA. I was crewing on #1006, the first Tbird he exported to USA. Having crewed on several of his glass Tbirds over the years, I too can confirm his mechanical prowess. I have the honor of stewardship for Leprechaun, Tbird #1075. She will be always bring positive memories of John and his Thunderbird legacy.

May he RIP.

John was a humble guy with immense talent. He and Bruce Bevan together rescued several "lost" keels, and re-invented instrument towers in BC - making them safer and easier to service. I well remember him working overnight during the Thunderbird Worlds, to repair a competitors boat - then racing around bleary-eyed the next day. He will be greatly missed.

This comes as such sad news, John was a salt of the earth type man with a heart of gold. I'll miss our talks of fishing, boating or all things mechanical. I remember John purchasing his resent Tolly and asking him "aren't you suppose to slow down as you get older?" he told me he had plans yet accomplished, like running the boat to Alaska. It goes to show you never put anything off like our plans to go fishing together. My condolences to the family and friends John will be missed by many more than your know.

Having wasted the best years of my life a T-Birder, I salute John and his dedication to the fleet. Among three I owned, one was a Booth 'Bird - #1079 I think, Breakaway. I sailed against him once in the Worlds in Victoria, where we both finished deep. He was a prince of a guy!

I just found about about John's death. So sorry to hear this, I will miss bumping in to him regularly during his visits to hang out with Bruce. He was always fun to talk to and I know of a fraction of his good deeds helping people out.

I didn't get the email about John's passing until today obviously after the celebration of life. John built Raptor for us in 1986 and I have Mini 12 #13 (originally built for my father-in-law) that John built. At our 2017 mini 12/illusion team racing in Victoria, I had a really nice time talking to John about what he was doing, various projects he was involved in and how he got started. I told him that I was considering buying Raptor back (which I did) and I asked him a side question about finding a yellow gel coat to match my Mini 12. On Sunday, John showed up in the morning with a bottle of gel coat that he had mixed to match my boat. No charge. Just because. That was who John was. If he decided that you were ok, he would do what he could to help. I feel lucky to be in the camp that he decided was ok. I wish I could have known about the celebration of life, because I would have liked to have been there. John was a one-of-a-kind person who, I think, represents the best of humanity. I'm sure he will be missed and remembered by his friends. I will certainly remember him every time I sail Raptor or Little Wing.

I ordered a brand new 26'Thunderbird from John in 1978 before I had ever sailed on one. John was an expert pattern maker and when I saw the new deck version that was taking place in his shop I was sold on ordering one for the Thunderbird Worlds in Vancouver in 1979.
I did so on the quality of his workmanship and his offer to customize it as production progressed.John was always willing to come down and patch up his boats, sometimes at no charge after an altercation on the race course. He will be missed.

I knew John from his James Bay days and travelling in his "cut" down model "T" Ford on our way to camping on Easter holidays. The obituary is a perfect description of him in the 50's and how he lived the remainder of his life. John - RIP

My sincere condolences to the family. I have nice memories of John from back in the seventies when we were neighbours on Wildwood. He was an exceptionally nice guy.
