John HOGG Obituary

JOHN WELLESLY HOGG, LLB, Q.C.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Wellesly Hogg on October 17th, 2017 in Victoria, B.C. He was born in Vancouver, B.C.

John was predeceased by his eldest son, Andrew, and his parents, Gilbert and Janet Hogg. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, sons Eric and Daniel (wife Laura Pringle), and grandson Macaulay. John also leaves his sister, Margaret, nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family and friends.

John graduated from UBC Law School in 1965. He practiced general law until 1979 when he joined the B.C. Government as Legislative Counsel, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Upon retirement in 2006 John received an offer from the Irish Government to draft legislation for them, and both he and Linda left for a new adventure. John loved his time in Dublin, loved Ireland and loved the Irish people. After 2 years John and Linda returned home to Victoria.

John loved his garden and enjoyed tackling renovations around the home. His pride and joy was his family. John and his terrific sense of humour will be terribly missed.

We would like to thank Dr. Dan Buie for his years of care, and the doctors and nursing staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital for their care and support over the past 2 months. A celebration of John's life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of B.C.

I am here in Pittsburgh PA, with my mother, Marion Brackenridge Thompson, at 97yo, daughter of Sir Alexander and Lady Alice Hogg Brackenridge, sister to the original John Hogg, making Gilbert Hogg mom's 1st cousin. Reading your story is lighting her up.

Saddened to hear that John has died. He was a knowledgeable and entertaining companion in the Parliamentary Counsel Office in Dublin. And he struck me as a very honourable and honest man.

I was delighted to learn from him that he had been born in Scotland. Not far from where I was born. He was hoping to revisit his birthplace. I hope he did.

Very sorry to hear about John's passing. We were classmates at View Royal School in the late '40s and early '50s. He was a class act and I had great respect for him. My condolences to his family. You will surely miss him.

I am very sad to learn of John's demise. He was a delightful companion during the time I knew him in Ireland when, like me, he worked in the Irish Office of Parliamentary Counsel as a Consultant Parliamentary Counsel during the 'noughties'

John was a fine fellow, good rugby player. Drove buses with him in 1963/64 for BC Hydro. Gone too soon.

Dear Family of John

We called him Red Eye. Not because he had a red eye but because there was a Red Eye Hay in the NHL, and because of some mixup on names, and because of his Red Eye - like dash on the ruggah field.

John was a proud, bright, strong guy and a real pleasure to know.

I regret we lost touch. We were good friends in our youth.

Trude and I send our condolences.
