John KRICH Obituary

John F. Krich, 86, sadly passed away on September 15, 2022 after a brave battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Cleveland, OH to parents John and Pauline Krich on August 10, 1936. John attended Baldwin Wallace College, majoring in theatre then went on to earn his MFA at the Yale School of Drama. He joined the UVic Theatre Dept. in 1969 helping to establish UVic's Phoenix Summer Theatre program. As a Professor of Theatre at UVic for more than three decades, John directed and acted in dozens of productions at the Phoenix as well as other local theatres. He was a much-loved teacher, mentoring his students and colleagues with dedication and artistry. He is survived by his sister, Paula, his three children Gretchen, Joel and Benjamin along with his two granddaughters, Jackson and Rosie. A Celebration of Life will be announced in the spring of 2023. We ask that in lieu of sending cards or flowers, donations be made to the Victoria Hospice in Victoria, BC in his name.

Dear John,
I miss you more than I can say. One of the kindest people I ever met.

One of the most awful things about the Covid pandemic is we stopped seeing people by chance encounter at events, in the grocery store, by connection of mutual friends. Only found out about John´s passing today by way of something posted.
A wonderful, kind and genial gentleman who I used to see quite frequently in my neighbourhood. Last time though was by lovely happenstance in Finnerty Gardens. He happened to be walking there when I was and a small group of UVic Theatre students were practising scenes from Shakespeare just around the bend. I led him round to them and introduced them. The students were delighted to meet him, in somewhat shy awe of seeing the real life person who they´d only heard about from their profs and seen in photos on the wall in the Phoenix. Left them to it but such lovely serendipity made my day. I think of it every walk through Finnerty.
Sincerest condolences to John´s family and friends and the theatre community. He will ever be `Everyman´ leaning on Gretchen´s ` Good Deeds´ in my theatre student memories.

I'm sorry to hear of John's passing. He and I grew up together thru the sixth grade at Memorial Elementary School and lived directly across the street from each other on E. 148th Street.

I used to chat with John at the YMCA, where we used the same workout section. As a regular Phoenix subscriber, it was always fun to critique the plays. He was, as ever, enthusiastic and loved to talk about the productions. I recall his excellent acting in 'Waiting for Godot' many years ago. A funny, knowledgeable and
enthusiastic man!

When we write "dear" to someone, this is what I think of when I think of John."Dear John." He was a towering talent, but a kind, and thoughtful, respectful person. He always had a story, and they were great stories. He was an actor who could have read the phone book and he could have made it fascinating.
