John Magi Obituary

It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of John, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. John was born in Karlstad, Sweden, and in the summer of 1951 immigrated with his family to Victoria, where he would spend the rest of his life. John had many jobs, eventually landing at Public Freightways as a truck driver. At the age of 50, John found his calling when he enrolled in Camosun College's carpentry program, a career he loved until his retirement in 2014.

John was very involved in his children's sports and many hours were happily spent from volunteering as field manager for Strawberry Vale Fastball, being the first one at the Prospect Lake soccer fields to set up the nets or be a linesman, and keeping time at Night League basketball. John was also a member of the Carpenters & Joiners Local 1598, where he served on the Executive for many years, even well past retirement. Due to John's carpentry and general handyman prowess, there are few family members, friends, or neighbours (you know who you are) to whom he has not lent a helping hand. John was also proud to volunteer his skills for the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

John's love of the outdoors led to many summers camping, gardening, and, later, golfing. His enjoyment of travel took him around the world; more recently, he and Ruth spent most vacations in the Caribbean and Palm Desert.

John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ruth; brother, Jaak (Barb); children, John Jr, Leonard (Troy), Lori (Fraser), Kim (Paolo), and Jacq (Rodo); grandsons Jake (Mandy), Dan, Joey, and Reece; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved so much.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 16, 2024 at 11 a.m., McCall Gardens, Sequoia Centre, 4665 Falaise Dr. Victoria, B.C.

Lots of good memories of John and his young family back in the day on Medanna St. James Bay.
We were all so young and full of...adventures.
Had lost track of him over the years. My condolences to the family so sad to hear of his passing.

I will miss John's dry sense of humour and political banter. I always looked forward to seeing him as I drove up Jennifer and Dave's driveway.
Thank you for all the laughs, John. Rest in peace. Fly with the angels.

We were sorry to hear about John. Over the years the four of us have had so much fun, whether getting together for a round of golf, a couple of cold beer or sharing a nice meal, usually in the same day. Ruth loves golf, John liked golf but loved golfing with Ruth. People have more talent than John golfing but nobody had more fun. He would talk to staff, look for balls, grab an orange off a tree if we were down South and on par 3 if he didn't like his tee shot, he would hit another one and if he didn't like that one he would hit another one. During one round, John was struggling to get out of a bunker. I said John I can give you a tip on how to make it easier. John says not interested Mike. He didn't care if it took him 1swing or ten. He was having fun doing it his way. I think most of us would enjoy the game more if we had his attitude about golf. He sure made me laugh and I always looked forward to spending time with him especially in Palm Desert.

Dear Ruth, Kim, Jaqueline & Family.
We are so saddened and shocked to hear of John´s passing.
The last time we saw John was when he and Kim stayed with us while Kim was first starting out with her journalism in Castlegar.
John´s larger than life personality had us all constantly laughing. The best part was watching Kim roll her eyes at all of her Dad´s "dumb" jokes. Such awesome and fun memories.
Thinking of you all so much.

John was an absolutely awesome man, I first met John at a First Aid course we were both taking for our jobs, I was wearing my Strawberry Vale Coach jacket, and he struck up a conversation about the ball league and that he had two wonderful daughters and wanted them to play ball, especially since they lived a ball throw away from the park. Then before you know John, Ruth, Kim and Jacq, all become well loved, liked and so much more with all those who played and worked at the park. We all had great times with the Magi family, and thought very highly for all the work John and Ruth did for Strawberry Vale. John you were a great and funny man, you will be missed by your family and friends. Susan and Dan Kubisheski and Eva Andersen.

To Jack and the family members of John Magi.
I was saddened to read of John's passing in today's Times Colonist. I was a part of another involvement with John and Jack, and that was with the boy scouts at St. Matthias church. We had many fine camping trips and John was always one to make any event FUN. My thoughts are with you all.
