John MCKNIGHT Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John. Surrounded by his family, John passed away peacefully at home in Victoria BC, on October 30, 2025.
Born on February 23, 1933 in Remington Park, Windsor, Ontario, to William and Maude, John lived a full and remarkable life.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 69 years, Sara (aka Sally); his son Patrick (Wendy); daughters, Cathy and Maureen (Richard); and, daughter-in-law Brenda. He will be deeply missed by his cherished grandchildren Steven, Jason (Krista), Christopher (Amanda), Jarrod (Katie) and Nicholas; and his great-grandchildren, Zoey (Ben), Drew, Charlise, Nevaeh, Easton and Ryan. John is also survived by siblings Marian, Neil, Lila, Cheryl, Martha and Brian; and, in-laws, Tom and Daniel Witty.
He was predeceased by his beloved son, Sean, as well as eight siblings.
At the age of 19, John proudly joined the Royal Canadian Navy, where he served for 25 years and retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He later continued his career with the BC Corrections Service.
After retirement, John and Sara moved to Courtenay to be closer to the ski slopes, a perfect setting for John's love of the outdoors, returning to Victoria in 2013 to be near family.
John will be remembered as a man whose energy, funny one-liners and warmth touched everyone around him. An avid cyclist, skier, walker and lover of the outdoors, he lived life in motion, always eager for the next ride, walk, or family adventure. Above all, John's heart belonged to his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and GG. John played a special role in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a steady source of love, guidance, and gentle wisdom, always leading by example through his kindness and integrity. Whether offering advice, sharing stories, or lending a helping hand, John helped shape their early years with patience and joy. His presence was a blessing, a quiet strength and a reminder of the power of unconditional love across generations.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff and caring community at The Renaissance, where John made his home for the past seven years.
There will be a private family celebration of life at a later date.
Ay Yi Yi - Love you more...

Earlier today

So grateful I got to spend time with John & Sara summertime of 25 & 24. Things I will miss about my brother..9am coffee, listening to his memories of his shipmates & travels, singing along with him & Sara to country music (he had a very good voice), concert in the park & with John & Cathy Mae, groaning to his corny one-liners, & more.
John had such a great love & pride for his kids & grandkids & great grandkids, John was a very humble man & modest, yet proud of his accomplishments.
John's love & respect for Sara were evident to all who knew them.
I spoke with my brother John days before he passed & the last goodbye is always the most heartfelt. Love you John.

Fair winds and following Seas. Grandpa, your watch is over and you can rest easy now, as we have the watch. You will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, you were a great influence on my decision to enroll in the Navy instead of the Army. My thoughts are with Grandma and all of our family. Love always

I sailed with John on HMCS Terra Nova '72-'74 , including our deployment to Vietnam in '73 (Westploy 73) ..... a deployment that few Canadians know about . John was just an all round great guy and "one of the boys" . During the following 50 years we had reunions for that trip and John usually was at them . At our 50th reunionin '23 I talked to him quite a bit and was amazed at how great he looked at 90 and how well he took care of himself ...what a guy . My condolences to the family , and I know he will be missed greatly by all who knew him . Fair winds and following seas , my friend...RIP .
