John Scheeren Obituary

SCHEEREN, John Stanly June 28, 1956 - December 21, 2020 It is with the deepest burden of sorrow that we have to announce the loss of the pillar of our family on December 21, 2020. After a tragic work place incident, John gave it everything he had and fought bravely for 3 weeks in Vancouver General Hospital, finally succumbing to his traumatic injuries. John was born and raised in Victoria on June 28, 1956. He eventually would marry his high school sweetheart and best friend, Lesley, and after 42 years of marriage they were both very proud of the family they had created. John (Dad) says goodbye to Lesley, his sons J.R. (Kate), and Robbie (Patti) and their son, his beloved grandson whom he cherished, Brooks. As much focus John put into his work, his true passion was his Family and being a true provider and role model, always committing to "doing better than his best." As in life and career, with most people that knew him, John was known for his work ethic and attention to detail to ensure everyone stayed on task, and most importantly, that everyone was safe doing so. He loved his career in the Construction Trade beginning the journey in 1975. During that time, he was involved in hundreds of projects (mostly local in Victoria) and mentoring many young people in the trades. John was an advocate for education in the trades as well, and became Gold Seal Certified in 2013. He put so much effort into his career and absorbed the weight and responsibility attached to his position with an unwavering professionalism. He leaves behind so many friends whose lives he touched and truly cared about. The family wants to send our most sincere and gracious appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and care providers at Vancouver General Hospital for showing our dad compassion and dignity in his final days. The level of care you offered and were able to extend reached our hearts especially when we were not able to be at his side. We know he felt our strength and love through you all. We love you dad, and we will make you proud. The Scheeren Family would like to extend an invitation to all the people he had touched in honoring John at his farm in Metchosin, BC. A date has not been selected at this time due to restrictions, but we look forward to seeing all of you soon, and sharing in his memory. Dear Scheeren family,
I was very lucky to have John work on one of my projects at the City of Victoria. Many more projects followed. He was hard working, honest, detail oriented and opinionated! What a character guy, and funny too! He was a pleasure to work with. Very upsetting to have heard of his untimely passing. I hope you are all coping with the loss. RIP John.

I am very saddened by the news of John's terrible accident and untimely death. As an architect I had the honour of working with him on several projects and always found him to be a true professional, a great problem solver and a driving force, serious but always with a twinkle in his eye. My sympathies go out to his family, friends and work colleagues. He will be greatly missed. RIP John.

Dear Lesley: I was shocked and saddened to read about John's passing. I remember all the fun times we had back in the late 70's and early 80's with the Oak Bay Rec Centre gang. I also remember how John was always willing to lend a hand with our "DIY" projects that were totally out of our scope of expertise!! My heart goes out to you, and I am grateful you have your boys for support. Sending you lots of love and a big virtual hug. Sheila McMicken (formerly Middleton).

Dear Lesley and family,
Leslie, we remember you and Johnny so well from when we were out there for Chris Goyette’s funeral. We had such a good visit with both of you then, even though brief, and Johnny gave us your phone number with an open invitation to come to the farm. It was very evident to us that he was a very personable, hardworking, sincere, and special guy. We got the obituary and the write up in the paper — both wonderful tributes to him.
Our hearts go out to you in this ever-so-tragic loss!!!
With utmost sympathy,
Ron & Marilyn Grunow
