TURNER, John William Ernest
May 8, 1934 - January 26, 2026
John Turner, beloved partner of Stella Barrie of Calgary, AB, for over twenty years, passed away on Monday, January 26, 2026, at the age of 91 years. He passed in comfort, peacefully in his sleep, with family present at his side.
John was a gentle, somewhat quiet giant of a man, both in stature and in his thoughtful heart. Most of his career was spent as an aircraft mechanic, first with the British Royal Air Force Fighter Command from 1949 to 1960, where he left with honours, and later with several airlines, including Qantas and Air Canada. His work took him to fascinating postings around the world, from Australia to the Canadian Arctic.
An athletic man who valued his health, John remained active throughout most of his life. Until recently, he swam daily for an hour, was a member of the Comox Valley Cycling Club, and was a lawn bowling champion in Qualicum Beach, BC. He shared his love of cycling with Stella, and together they combined this passion with travel, cycling through New Zealand, Hawaii, parts of Canada, and the United States.
John is survived by Stella, her children, Brad (Maureen) Barrie, Janis Barrie, and Bruce (Bonnie) Barrie, all of Calgary, AB; her grandchildren, Matthew Barrie, Scott (Amy) Barrie, Aly (James) Murch, Jack Barrie, and Kyra Barrie. He also has a niece, Dawn, in the United Kingdom.
He was predeceased by his spouse of over 30 years, Lilian Mary Turner (nee Green), who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2006. He is also predeceased by his sister.
