John Wikkerink Obituary

On April 6, 2021, John Wikkerink, husband, dad and opa, took the hand of his beloved Saviour and went to his eternal home. He is now free from the struggles of this earthly life.

John was born on December 30, 1934 to Jan Willem and Engelina Wikkerink, farmers in Aalten Netherlands as the oldest of 8 children. He immigrated to Canada in 1954 with his parents and family.

He married his wife, Antje (Ann) in 1961 and they started their dairy farming life together, and had their 3 children in Shawnigan Lake before moving to Cobble Hill where the farm continues today.

John had a deep love for his Lord and Saviour. He shared that in his love for his family foremost, supportive and encouraging he was always there to guide. The arrival of grandchildren was the greatest joy! John's love expanded to the land, animals, and to the many people that were a part of his life in the greater community, in the church family and among his many, many friends and neighbors. John had a unique and special graciousness that allowed him to touch many lives in various ways.

Special thanks to all the incredible people at Cerwydden Care Home, for your friendship and loving care these last years.

Survived by his wife Ann, Wayne (Lisa), Justin, Dawson, Joseph, David; Ridley (Karen) Amy, Izzy, Joel, Lauren, Tak; Joan (Brad) Logan and Olivia; 5 brothers, 1 sister and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his parents and brother Rudolf.

I worked for John for two summers in the late 1980s, while in university. He was the kindest boss you could wish for. I was not an experienced farmer but the project management skills I picked up there benefited me for the rest of my life. My prayers are with you, Anne, Wayne, Ridley and Joan.

We met John in 1993, one year after we moved to Vancouver Island. A very kind man, he spoke quietly and with reverence to my wife, whose parents immigrated from Holland to Nova Scotia. He will definitely be remembered. Her family, too, had 13 children!

John and Ann invited me into their lives a few years ago. He reminded me of my dad who also came to Canada from Holland. I was privileged to help with their farm bookkeeping and was welcomed by Wayne, Ridley and Joan. While it seems strange that he is no longer with us we know that he is in a far better place, no longer struggling with health issues. We respected John and felt the sincere warmth of his friendship. Sending his family hugs .. he loved you all.
