Joseph GOUGEON-RYANT Obituary

Joseph Charles Gougeon-Ryant, 86 years old, passed away in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 23, 2022.

Born on July 12, 1935 in Montreal, Joe grew up and was educated in Montreal, and later lived primarily in Winnipeg and Victoria. He had extensive stays in England and Hong Kong. Joe and his wife Ann returned to Winnipeg in 2020 to be closer to his middle son, Howard, and to Ann's son, Jordan.

Joe had a long and successful career as an academic, primarily as a professor of Social Work at the University of Manitoba, serving also for a time as Head of the School of Social Work. In the early 1990's, he was Head of Social Work at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was passionate about his work and loved what he did until he retired in the late 1990's.

Joe married Ann Gougeon in 2000. He was a devoted and loving husband to his "Annie". He loved sitting on the couch, holding her hand, and singing a song to her. It was apparent to all that Joe and Ann were truly a loving couple.

Joe's family and friends remember him as an engaged and witty conversationalist; he was interested in what others had to say, and loved to talk about important issues of the day. He loved keeping up with politics, and was a voracious reader of several news publications.

Joseph is survived by his wife Ann; his three children, Nathan (Marylu), Howard (Brenda-Lee), and Richard (Hélène). He was grandfather to Bradley (Kelcie), Jeremy (Rebecca), Cayla, and great-grandfather to Sawyer.

Cremation has taken place. It was Joe's wish not to have a service. Donations in his name can be made to the charity of your choice.

Ann, Nathan, Howard, Richard and families,
When I think about Uncle Joe, I always picture my dad and yours, deep in conversation sitting in our living room or walking around the block (shoulders hunched) and oblivious to the rest of the world. Your dad always gave his total attention to the person he was speaking with. That is an endearing trait.
He will be greatly missed.
Love, Paula (and son Eric)
