Joseph Mitchell Obituary

MITCHELL, Joseph Donald Of Victoria, BC, recently of Crescent Valley, BC, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2009 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend and was greatly loved by all. Joe will be remembered as an iconic figure at the Victoria YM/YWCA for nearly 40 years as a member, instructor, coach, mentor and supporter of what he considered his second home. He was especially involved in the swimming and skin diving and badminton programs in the early years and then passionately committed to the racquetball community for the past 30 years. He will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched over the years. Joe asks that his friends and family join together in Victoria, at the Executive House Hotel in the Banquet Room across the hall from Bart's from 1 to 3 pm on May 17th to celebrate his life and legacies. In lieu of flowers, his daughters request that donations be made to the Joe Mitchell Endowment Fund to support memberships and programmes for youth at the Victoria YM/YWCA. 535234

Lisa and Carolyn, I'm so sorry for your loss. It's odd but I've been thinking about Joe in the last few weeks and wondering where and how he was. I have't seen him for years. Today I heard of his passing. I feel so sad. I met Joe in the early eighties and was one of the lucky ones to have him instruct me in racquetball. Later we became mixed doubles partners in racquetball tournaments for quite a number of years. I have fond memories of those times. Joe was a good friend and a great person with a big heart. He will definitely be missed.

Lisa and Carolyn
I was so saddened to hear of your dad's passing. Joe was my very first racquetball coach at the Y in the 1980's. For a number of years during my youth we played racquetball together almost everyday - and on many occasions twice a day. He was a true mentor to me throughout my youth in so many ways...and I have and will always have a special place for him in my heart. My thoughts are with you both and your families.

My thoughts are with you Carolyn, Lisa and your families. It is so sad that you have lost your dad and the next generation have lost their grandfather. Cherish your memories of him. I will greatly miss him and wish it had been possible to know him better were it not for the miles separating our families.
