Joy Message Obituary
With sorrow for our loss - but deep gratitude for her long and loving life - we remember Joy.
Joy was born in Calgary, the second child of Alfred and Muriel Schaufele. She joined her brother, Ron, and later welcomed her sister, Carol. Joy's growing up years were spent in Calgary. There she met and married our father, Donald Geoffrey Message.
Joy and Don were married on April 29, 1955. They honeymooned in Victoria - at a motel in Cadboro Bay. Could Joy have guessed that she would spend sixty plus years in this lovely, seaside community? Joy and Don both loved Cadboro Bay. They developed lifelong friendships there; together they fashioned a home, fabulous yard and ever-growing garden.
Joy and Don welcomed three children: Colleen Joy, Maureen Carol and William Geoffrey. As the years slipped by, five grandchildren were added to the clan. Still later, "Gramma Joy" welcomed three great-grandchildren.
Joy was an amazing woman; a three-time cancer survivor, she kept her strength and dignity to the very end. Joy spent her last twenty years without Don; all of us are proud of her tenacity, resilience and willingness to tackle new things. Joy modeled so much for us. All throughout our lives.
Joy was a loyal friend, supportive wife, loving mother and grandmother. Joy was a legal secretary, school secretary and volunteer extraordinaire. She gave her all to whatever her hand found to do: baking, cooking, gardening, sewing, knitting, flower arranging, tending seedlings in her greenhouse. Joy shared all these gifts gladly. Joy made "Summer at Sea Edge" and "Christmas at Queenswood" legendary. We cannot begin to thank her.
Left to mourn are her children: Colleen Murphy, Maureen (John) Brouwer, Bill (Bianca) Message; grandchildren: Rebecca Brouwer, Matthew Brouwer, Bethany (Devon) Remington, Laura Sherwood, Don (Nicole) Sherwood; great-grandchildren: Seo-Yeong, Taeho, Wyatt.
Joy also leaves her oldest and dearest friend, Gem Templeman. Their wonderful friendship spanned sixty-six years.
As a family, we thank the staff and residents of Berwick House for providing Joy her "home away from home".
A service in celebration of Joy's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 17 at Saanich Baptist Church.
