Joyce Bewley Obituary

BEWLEY, Joyce
Joyce's loving family are heartbroken the light of our lives has dimmed. We have been deeply affected by her generosity, humility and loving kindness.
Joyce died peacefully October 2, 2023 with her family at her side, as she wished.
Joyce was born in 1933 in Sault Ste Marie, ON to Alice and Harold Green and grew up with four siblings. After high school, she moved to Toronto, where she met Lorne Bewley; they married in 1953. They raised their three daughters in Edmonton, where Joyce loved summers with them at the Lake and winters skiing at Jasper.
After a move to Vancouver Island in 1973, Joyce met new challenges of single parenting and finding a new path in life. She was accepted into the initial class of the UVic School of Social Work. There she realized latent talents that would change her life and benefit clients and colleagues for years after. She graduated in 1978 and began work at The Law Centre, before taking a Master's degree at UBC. She then worked at Saanich Community Mental Health, becoming Adult Programs Coordinator and sometimes Acting Director, until her retirement.
Joyce was active in the start-up of Victoria Single Parent Resource Centre, Divorce Lifeline (now Family Services of Greater Victoria), Victoria Family Violence Project, and Victoria Coalition for Survivors of Torture.
Joyce made many life-long friends with her happy, modest and generous nature. She enjoyed family gatherings, music and theatre, walks and dinners with friends, and travel in Canada and some 50 other countries.
Joyce leaves to grieve her passing and cherish the gift of her life in theirs: her life partner, Rick Marshall; siblings, Bill and Lorna Green and Sally Slinger; devoted daughters, Kristy MacKinnon, Karen Macquisten (Ken), and Jaye Bewley (Marc); Macquisten grandchildren, Mike (Shayna), Rob (Joy), Steve (Heather), and favourite granddaughter, Ali (Jeff); and six great-grandchildren.
There will be no service at this time; the family will later host a celebration of Joyce's life. A student award will be established in her name at UVic School of Social Work. Contributions to that award will be welcomed.
