Joyce CHILIBECK Obituary

CHILIBECK, Joyce 1927 - 2014 Passed away peacefully on July 6th 2014 at the age of 87. Joyce was born in Success Sask. on a homestead, the youngest of a large family. After serving in the army in WW2, she and her father moved to Victoria where she met her husband. She had her own hairdressing shop in Victoria until she was married. Nick Chilibeck and Joyce were married on March 28 1948. They worked very hard building houses and raising their family. Joyce had many hobbies and was always a very cheerful and active woman. She enjoyed singing in choirs, playing the piano, camping, knitting, sewing, crochet, tatting, making preserves, square dancing, lawn bowling, walking, gardening and visiting with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Duncan United, Gordon United and later Centennial United Churches, Sons of Norway House, various square dance groups, British Car Club, Juan De Fuca Seniors Group, and Ukrainian Culture Centre. In their retirement, Joyce and Nick traveled to many countries on four continents. They loved meeting new people, experiencing new cultures and trying various ethnic foods. They traveled to Mexico in their motor home for many years. In 2008 Joyce had two massive strokes yet maintained her loving and compassionate disposition, and still managed to play the piano with her good hand. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Nick Chilibeck, her husband of 66 years, her three sons Gary, Richard and Terry (Brenda Belanger), her nine grandchildren Laura (Todd) Kennedy, Emily, Julia (Robb Mullins), Megan (Sam Buckle), Colin (Kat Davy-Trayner), Corina, Bonnie Evano-Chilibeck (Stefan Evano), Sean, Wendy and two great-grandchildren Caleb and Tristian Kennedy. Joyce is survived by one sister Mary Lattenville of Vernon BC. She was predeceased by her daughter Shirley Chilibeck (1976), her parents Andrew (Anders) and Aadru Egeland (from Vats Norway), and siblings Annie, Andy, Martha, Audrey, Rita, Melvin, Henry and Irene. Funeral service will be held in her memory at Centennial United Church, 612 David Street, Victoria, BC on July 12, 2014 at 1:00 PM with interment to follow at the Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of their choice. Condolences for the family may be offered at www.sequoiagardens.com

To Nick and the Family, our Sympathy.
Joyce was a cheerful and very talented Lady. I met both of you at the Sons of Norway Functions. Joyce had taught a lot of us , her talent for Tatting, she did the most beautiful and intricate work. A lot of the Members have her tatting on their Leikerring Blouses , or their Blouses for the Bunads. We all remember the days of going to Camp Barnard for the Norsk Arv camp, Nick teaching the horse-shoes, & Joyce teaching Tatting.
Just think of all the lacy clouds and Angel wings that will show up soon.
Our Deepest Regards, The Denluck Family

Dear Nick and "boys" (because that's what Joyce always called you!): My sincerest sympathies to you all. In one of the ironies of life, I had hoped to see Joyce today on my visiting rounds. I still hope to see you Nick! If I miss you, know that I am with you in spirit and my warmest sympathies go out to you all. Joyce was an amazing woman, and your marriage was such a special one. For better or for worse, in sickness and in health - always. Your dedication to each other was an inspiration. Much love to you.

My heartfelt condolences to all of the Chilibeck family on your loss. I enjoyed getting to know Nick and Joyce when I was at Selkirk. Nick was always by her side. I watched Joyce play the piano and it always put a smile on her face and mine as well. My thoughts are with you.......

To Nick and family
It has been many years since we have seen you both but I have many happy memories of you both with Phyllis and Max, Alf and Peggy, so that tells you how long it was. Marion passed some moths ago but she always spoke fondly of you both. I have a previous commitment and cannot make the service but my thoughts are with you.
