Joyce KOPAN Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce that Joyce Diane Kopan passed away all too soon on December 18th, 2023, in Victoria, B.C. Joyce loved to travel, watch sports, garden, take in live music, host friends for a drink, and spoil her pets. Joyce devoted her career to teaching music and directing the music program at Belmont Secondary. Her musical and teaching legacies live on in many of her former students, student teachers, and musicians in Victoria and beyond. Joyce, known to many as 'Kopan', will always be remembered for her unique and "spicy" personality, sense of humour, and kind heart. Friends and family will treasure many memories of Joyce's positive impact on their lives and her capacity to be a listening ear and supportive presence. She was deeply loved and will truly be missed.
We invite you to share memories of Joyce at www.earthsoption.com. Donations in memory of Joyce can be made to the BC Cancer Agency, Belmont Music Program, or the Royal Victoria Conservatory.

Like Shaun below (hope you're doing well Shaun, best), I met Joyce while playing in the Colquitz and Mount View school bands. Joyce quickly became, and still is, one of my favourite people. I was able to get together with Joyce occasionally over the past few years and will miss our chats. She was one of a kind.

We are saddened by Joyce's passing. I first met her at UVic as a fellow flute student in the Music Dept. In our teaching careers, we joined the Sooke District the same year, I was at Glen Lake and she was at Belmont. She loved receiving my students into her classes. Her music programs were highly regarded by students, their parents and colleagues in school music programs as she was demanding but devoted to excellence. As a colleague of my husband Rex, we enjoyed Joyce's sense of fun at staff functions, at Harbour Cats' games and music festivals up-island. A bright light has gone out.

Rest in Peace, Joyce. Was saddened to hear of your passing. A long long time ago, we played in the school band, at Colquitz and Mount View. Was thrilled to hear you went on to become a music teacher. Bob Whittet would be proud.
