Judith Coburn Obituary

Judith Ann Coburn (nee Newman) ("Judy"), 84. passed away peacefully in Victoria, B.C. on December 30, 2025 after a short illness and a life well-lived. Judy was born in Saskatchewan but moved with her family to British Columbia when she was a young girl. Judy's mother, Ann, passed away when Judy was a teenager. This was, of course, difficult for Judy but she benefitted from having a loving father, Thomas, as well as three supportive older siblings. In particular, her sister Rhoda, who was nearly twenty years Judy's senior, was something of a surrogate mother to Judy. After graduating high school, Judy worked at a bank where she met Bob Coburn. The two hit it off immediately and were married in Vancouver in 1965. After spending several years in the Lower Mainland, highlighted by the birth of their daughter, Kathleen, and after a brief stint in the Yukon where their son, Michael, was born, Judy and Bob moved to Kamloops where they spent the next 25 years. In Kamloops, in addition to being a busy mother, Judy worked at CIBC where she enjoyed the daily social interaction with co-workers and customers. But perhaps Judy's favourite aspect of living in Kamloops was its proximity to Shuswap Lake. She spent most of many summers "at the Lake" enjoying regular swims, reading on the beach and happy hour with friends. After retiring, Judy and Bob moved to Victoria to join Kathleen and her husband Carmen (deceased 2017). Judy loved Victoria. With the free time that comes with retirement, she gardened, walked daily by the ocean and developed new friendships. Her love of social engagement continued into her final years when she was frequently an honoured guest at the various social events that Kathleen hosted and was on the phone almost daily with her dear niece Sandra or her closest friend Diane. Outside of spending time with her friends and family, Judy had a broad range of interests. She was passionate about current events and would read multiple newspapers daily. She loved following the Canucks, watching international soccer and listening to Willie Nelson while having a cup of tea (or, occasionally, a vodka with cranberry and soda). She was also a great lover of animals. Whether it be the family dog Toby, her walking buddy Jake or her final pet, Norman the cat, Judy always found animals to be the most excellent companions. Judy is survived by her children Kathleen and Michael (Kristina) and her grandson Theo and is predeceased by her husband Bob, her brothers Tommy (Yve) and Gerry (Jean) and her sister Rhoda (Sam). As per Judy's request, no service will be held but we encourage all to join us in toasting her memory. She will be missed.
