It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Dr. Karen Kobayashi of Victoria BC on May 28, 2022. Her final days were spent surrounded by her loving family and friends.
As a Professor (Department of Sociology) and Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) for the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Victoria, her passion, dedication and commitment to researching the effects of health and aging, and her generosity to collaborate and give back to the research communities, will remain a legacy for many years to come.
Karen will be missed by her devoted husband Cary Hayashi, their son Kaelan, father Jim Kobayashi and father-in-law Ed Hayashi, her extended family, many friends and colleagues. She is predeceased by her mother Mary, and mother-in-law Mitzi.
Karen appreciated great food, great 80s music, and shopping. She had style and was well dressed. Always. She was a loyal fan at Kaelan's many games and tournaments. Her dynamic personality and enormous amounts of energy would always light up a room.
Our deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and support staff at Vancouver General Hospital for the wonderful care and support given to Karen and her loved ones.
A memorial service will be held in Toronto on July 7 at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre; visitation at 6:00 pm, service at 7:00 pm. Another service will be held in Esquimalt on August 13 at 1:00 pm at the Esquimalt Gorge Park Pavilion, 1070 Tillicum Road.
In lieu of flowers and koden, donations would be gratefully accepted to Karen's Memorial Go-Fund-Me Page
https://gofund.me/68ae93e7 which will be used to create a scholarship fund at UVic in Karen's memory.
