Kenneth GILL Obituary

Surrounded by the love and prayers of his family, Ken passed away quietly to his eternal home at the age of 58.

A loving and devoted husband of 35 years to Marie, proud father of Brian (Lindsay) and Ashley (Richard), beloved son of Monte and Sylvia, and brother to David and Colleen (Bob), his life will be well remembered.

Born in Sidney, BC, Ken graduated from Parkland High School in 1978. He soon married the love of his life, Marie Williamson, and set out to build a life and family together.

After high school, Ken followed his community service passion and completed a distinguished 33-year firefighting career with the Langford, DND, Sidney and Oak Bay Fire Departments. He retired in 2014 from the Oak Bay FD as a Captain Inspector. Post retirement Ken had a strong desire to remain in a supportive role to his fellow FD members. Ken naturally assumed the role of Oak Bay FD Chaplain, which soon expanded to include Esquimalt FD. Ken's commitment to helping and serving others was an inspiration to his family who are all involved in public health care and emergency services today.

Ken's greatest passion and source of pride was his family and friends. He also loved the outdoors and was continually out hiking, biking, and camping with his family at his side. Ken's support for his kids and their activities was unwavering. He served as a lead member of the Piranhas Swim Club and was always present and supporting them at swim meets and their other various sporting events.

Ken's faith in Christ was a strong and stable force in his life. As a committed member of the leadership team at Peninsula Mission Community Church in North Saanich, Ken was the kind of warm and welcoming personality that everyone was drawn to. Faithful to His Lord he constantly reached out to those in need and remained a loyal and trusted companion to his many friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Glad Tidings Church, 1800 Quadra St, Victoria, BC, on Monday, April 16, 2018 at 1:00pm. Parking limited, come early. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oak Bay Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation to be put towards First Responder's mental health services. There are very few people who cared about the Fire Service as much as Ken Gill. He was the most honest, caring person I have ever met, he dedicated his life to helping other people and making the Fire Service a better place. I feel so honoured to be able to call Ken my friend and he will be deeply missed by all. I personally will miss his kind and calming conversations, his smile, his laugh and his uncanny ability to make a really bad situation seem better. The Fire Service will never be the same without him. Rest in peace my friend.

My deepest sympathies to the family and friends during this very difficult time.

When a man becomes a fireman, his act of bravery has already been accomplished.
What he does after that is all in the line of work.
A firefighter is perhaps the last noble warrior on earth!
Not in it for the fame or money,
But because it's what needs to be done.
Few selfless acts are left in this world,
But that which a firefighter does is both selfless and daring!!!
May we all be blessed to survive the fate that fell our brothers,
May his sole be lifted and held higher than any others.
May they sit alongside the presence of our maker, himself.
And may he bless, as he has blessed no others.

May you RIP Peace Ken you will be missed.

Sending greetings with love and compassion. Indescribable loss for all and families. Sometimes the space between words, the quiet ebbing waves speaks soothingly into the depth of sorrow. While I've not walked exactly in your shoes, I extend a prayer for comfort in the mourning seasons, knowing they will be present long after the flowers fade. May God help us all.

I had the absolute pleasure of working along side Ken from when I started my Fire Service career in 2007 to when he retired in 2014. From my first shift to his last, Ken was truly a dedicated, humble, and admired man. His quiet confidence, integrity and approachable demeanor made him a leader. He was someone that any rookie or senior member could look up to; Ken simply set the bar.
He loved the Brotherhood and the comradery that came with working shoulder to shoulder with others towards the the greater good.
I will eternally miss Ken's presence in my life however I am forever thankful to have been able to call him my Brother, confidant and friend.
Love you Capt.
We will take it from here
At ease my friend.
