Kenneth Lum Obituary

LUM, Kenneth King Lung 1930 - 2021 Ken died peacefully on June 29, 2021 in Victoria, BC. He was a generous soul who will be missed greatly. He was a proud father and grandfather, everyone's friend, and "uncle" to many in the Chinese community. Predeceased by his wife, Andra Lum in 2020 and grandson, Jacob Twyford, in 2011; Ken is survived by daughter, Wency; grandson, Ben Twyford; and daughter, Cissy. Ken was born in China in 1930 and came to Canada in 1952 to join his grandfather. Ken had humble beginnings but worked hard to provide a good life for his family. He started a few businesses, including Lum's Polynesian Restaurant in 1963 and Lum's Colwood Restaurant in 1967. The formative years of his childhood and youth shaped the values that he passed on to his family: hard work, kindness to people and animals, perseverance, and respect for education and lifelong learning. He loved to tell stories to strangers, and was proud that he taught himself to read in Chinese and English. A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 11, from 2-4 pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria BC. Family and friends are welcome to come any time between 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to BC Children's Hospital, which provided critical pediatric cancer care for Ken's grandson, Jacob. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallgardens.com

In 1971, we lived in Esquimalt and were building a house in Langford. We often stopped in Colwood for dinner at Lum's. It was our Chinese restaurant of choice until it was no longer there. One time, my husband had left his wallet at home and I did not have my purse. We were thinking one of us would have to go down to my brother's who lived by Parsons Bridge and borrow some money. Worried that he would think we were trying to leave without paying, we told him what we were going to do. He wouldn't hear of it and insisted that we could pay next time we were in, which is what we did.

He was very fond of our son, who was born in 1974, and always made a fuss over him when we went in. We missed him once the restaurant closed and have thought of him fondly and often over the years.

Dear Wency and Ben. My heart and thoughts are with you both. It is always hard to loose a parent no matter how old you are. I never had the opportunity to meet you father, Wency but I sure wish I had. He sounded like a very interesting person. Please take care. Love and big hugs.
