To the Thorne family,
Along with many others, I had the privilege of getting to know your family when your precious daughter ,Karen was a patient on Strathcona Pavilion, RJH..Over the course of a nursing career, one looks after many, many patients. The fact that we (class of Jan '74),,often remember the battle that Karen fought so bravely,
and the grace and dignity that you and Ken showed at this tragic time, speaks to the fact that you are an incredible family...and that , as students, you taught us so much by example.
As you struggle through yet another devastating loss, I hope you'll feel the love ,support ,and prayers, we send your way.

With deepest condolences ,..Anne (Boulton) Reeson

Dear Mrs Thorne,
I would like to express my sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of your beloved husband Ken.
I was a student nurse at the Royal Jubilee Hospital when your dear little daughter Karen was a patient. Her memory has been in my heart since her passing in 1973. When we gather, my nursing class often talk of the impact her short little life had on us young women.
We also hold in our hearts the memory of you and Ken and the love and strength you expressed in caring for Karen during the difficult time of her illness. On a personal level, you and Ken were an example to me on the power of love in the midst of great sorrow.
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Gail Bramley

Dear Freda,
We were so shocked & saddened to hear of Ken's passing. Paul was rendered speechless when he spoke with you on the phone as he had just had such a nice chat with Ken at the hospital.
With all the changes in "Sidney by the Sea", all the newcomers, yaughts sailing into the port etc, to still see Ken driving the old volvo around town was a delight. He will be missed.
Know our thoughts are with your family.

Dear Mrs. Thorne, family and friends,
I would like to send my sympathies to all of you at this sad time. You will not remember me, but I remember you and your husband so well. I was a student nurse on pediatrics at RJH in 1973 when your little daughter, Karen was so very ill. I recall vividly the courage, love and compassion you showed as you stood by Karen's side day and night. I believe you had a motor home parked outside the pediatric ward so you could be with her constantly. I was a young nurse at the time and I could not fully comprehend the anquish of losing a dear sweet child. However, I want you to know that I felt so much grief for you and your husband, as did my fellow nurses who worked on peds. I hope that in some small way I eased the terrible journey you suffered by trying to be a caring nurse for Karen. I also want you to know that your little Karen has never been forgotten by my nursing class. Her name comes up all the time at our reunions, as she touched our hearts and souls, as both of you did too. I have grown children of my own and have cherished every day with both of them as I saw at a young age how precious life is.
Sending you a huge hug in the loss of your husband and hope he and Karen are shining down on all of you at this very difficult time.
Deepest Sympathy,
Cathy McKenzie (Rapanos) Class of Jan. 74 RJH
