Kevin Whelan Obituary

WHELAN, Kevin (Ken) Patrick October 24, 1946 - September 16, 2016 It is with heavy hearts and love that we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather on Friday, September 16th at the age of 69 years. Ken passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospice, surrounded by his loving family. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 44 years, Corinne (nee Parslow), his children Jennifer (Marc), Amanda (Aaron), Gregory, Spencer (Sherilyn), his grandchildren Kaitlyn, Jordan and Emily and his brother Gerry (Suzanne) as well as many other extended family members, nieces and nephews. Ken was born in Toronto and moved to Edmonton in 1970 to complete a Masters' Degree in Physical Education and play football at the University of Alberta, where he met and married Corinne. They worked together to raise their family and shared many happy times and holidays with their children. He supported his children's pursuits, especially sports, and was a dedicated, supportive and loving father. Ken was an outstanding, hardworking and dedicated teacher for 35 years (ECSD) who loved teaching and the children he taught and who valued the colleagues that he worked with. He shared his passion for sports in coaching many school teams and his sons' hockey and lacrosse. Ken loved to spend time with his family, play tennis, bicycle and canoe and had fond memories of a trip taken with friends on the Nahanni River. Ken and Corinne retired to Victoria, B.C. in 2010, where he continued to enjoy playing tennis, biking and the many social activities he and his wife shared with new friends. They pursued their dream of travelling and spent many weeks each year sailing and scuba diving on 'Barbados Bound' with friends in Thailand. They also cruised around Australia and to South America to stand atop Machu Picchu together. Ken will be remembered for the love and devotion he had for his family, the countless lives he touched throughout his teaching career, for his love of life, adventure, sports and sense of fun, all of which will forever be in our hearts. We are grateful to our friends and family for their love, support and prayers during Ken's final journey. We would like to extend an overwhelming thank you to Dr. Henri-Bhargava, the Staff at the Victoria General Hospital 6th floor Neuroscience Unit, and the Staff at Victoria Hospice for their exemplary and compassionate care. A celebration of Ken's life will be held in both Victoria and Edmonton at later dates. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Ken's name to Victoria Hospice.

Mr. Whelan was my teacher at St. Mary's Junior and Senior High in the 70's. I was very sorry to hear he had passed away. He was one of the most caring teachers, and always remembered me by name...not my first name but he would call me by surname and salutation. How cool is that. I felt like he empowered me with the same confidence he had. Great role model. Sincere condolences to your family. Sorry for the late notice. I just heard. God Bless!

Ken was a valued and beloved colleague and confidante at H. E. Beriault. I missed him as soon as he retired and looked forward to his visits when he would return to Edmonton. I will miss his wonderful value of life and family. He cherished every moment with his loved ones and I thoroughly enjoyed his stories bragging on his children. He was so very proud of each one. I will miss my dear friend.

Ken Whalen was a wonderful teacher to our boys at H.E.Beriault junior high. He was full of stories about his own children and accomplishments made in his life. He was such a great mentor to all young people and made them believe they could achieve anything! Our oldest son has gone on to become a teacher, the next, an electrician and the youngest son. a Mechanic. Thank you for inspiring our young men. They broke the mould when they made you! Sincere condolences to your wife and children and grandchildren❤

This man was the only man that could make me grasp math. I really needed him to follow me throughout junior high and high school. He will be dearly missed. If there is a service in Edmonton, I would be honoured to attend. My condolences to his family during this time. Rest in Peace Mr. Whelan

I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Whelan as my Phys. Ed and Mathematics teacher at H.E. Beriault Catholic Junior High School (2004-2006). Mr. Whelans dedication and passion for teaching made him an idol of many, many students, myself included. Most of my fondest memories from these years involve Grade 9 gym class and the bonds forged with my friends under Mr. Whelans spirited instruction. I am happy to hear that he enjoyed many travels in his retirement and was able to spend this time with family and friends.

It is tough to hear that such a strong role model for thousands of students has passed away. Mr. Whelan was a positive outgoing man, willing to help whenever he could. He established long term friendships with many of his students and genuinely cared about our progress. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He will be missed by many.

Very sad to hear of Mr. Whelan's passsing. I remember him teaching at St. Mary's Jr/Sr high school and being a coach for our soccer teams. I remember one game where I had been on the sidelines because I wasn't feeling to good. It was getting late in the game and I asked "coach, can I get in the game" He looked at me and said absolutely and the next whistle, he substituted me in the game. He always gave everyone a fair shake at things. My condolences to the Whelan family.

I'm so lost for words. This amazing individual changes so many lives. Mr. Whelan was my teacher for elementary and junior high, coached me lacrosse, he was my boss for summer hockey, coached chess. Mr. Whelan in elementary always made sure students had lunches and if someone didn't he would ask for others to help a friend. At lacrosse no matter what if you wanted to play, you would have the opportunity, it didn't matter money can be raised and equipment will be found. Coach was an inspiration for so many people. When I needed help with homework, him and his family helped me out. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Going to miss you coach!

Our St Clement and HE Beriault Catholic School Alumni are in shock and disbelief in the passing of Mr Ken Whelan. Ken was always the gentleman, always a broad smile, and the female staff all knew that he was so damn handsome! Ken inspired students to broaden their horizons with academics, sports, and the game of Chess. Our school regularly hosted City-wide and Regional Student Chess tournaments that were organized in a First Class fashion. Ken had a passion for his family, a deep love for Wife Corinne, and loved engaging students in football, hockey and lacrosse. Ken also had a love for sailing, and always offered his friends to join him for a "Sail at Lake Wab". We have lost a fine person, a man with integrity, a "guy's guy", and a teacher who really made a difference with his students and colleagues. Rest in Peace Ken and many Prayers and Blessings for Corinne and your children.

I was extremely saddened to hear of Mr. Whelan's passing. I was lucky enough to first meet him as a hockey coach when I played with Greg in atom, and then extremely lucky again to have him as a teacher and coach again through junior high. If it wasn't for Mr. Whelan I can say without a doubt that I would not be the teacher I am today, as I try every day to be a sign of hope and inspiration for my students as he was for me. I hope you all find peace in these trying times.

I'm so sorry to hear of "Mr. Whelan" leaving this world. He was my high school teacher and I always loved him. He and his boys also ran a shinny hockey league which my son attended and it was obvious how much he loved kids and sports. Prayers for his family.
