Kory LEWIS Obituary

LEWIS, Kory (Regan) (nee Gwen Turvey) Was born March 12, 1921 in Chilliwack, BC. Passed into the presence of her Lord October 16th, 2012 at Victoria General Hospital. Predeceased by her parents Arthur and Gladys Turvey, brother Lyle (Millicent), niece Marilyn Penner, her husband of 17 years Dr. Harold Lewis and her namesake Kory Marshall. Survived by great-niece Dawn (Bob) Arksey of Abbotsford, great-nephew Rory Slater of Richmond, great-great niece Lorna Franzen (Matt) and her sons Preston, Tyrin and Carter of Abbotsford. Also cousins in England and Australia, several "adopted" families and the congregation of Emmanuel Baptist Church where she had been a faithful member for over 40 years. After serving in the Women's Division of the RCAF during World War II, Kory had a long teaching career in the Fraser Valley, Penticton, Montreal, Victoria and Gibsons. She was also a Career Education and Curriculum Consultant with the Ministry of Education and took an active role in the BCTF, GVTA and Retired Teacher's Association. The Christian influence of her parents shaped her entire life of service in both church and community. She served as the Moderator of the Vancouver Island Association of Baptist Churches, was a member of the board of Carey Theological College, Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, and two terms on the Saanich Police Board. She directed youth camps in the Okanagan and Keats Island and supported Sylvan Acres Baptist Camp by serving on their Board. She was a "volunteer extraordinaire" as a receptionist at the Mustard Seed and "jack-of-all trades" in her church office. She had a passion to support Canadian Baptist Ministries in Canada and abroad. The Baptist Union Ministers of the Island benefited from her encouragement and marvelous meals on a regular basis. Many were on the receiving end of her organizational skills in planning events such as Missions Festivals, Thanksgiving Banquets, surprise parties and funeral receptions. Kory loved people, pets, photography, music, swimming, canoeing, flying, driving and ice-cream! A Memorial service will be held Friday, November 2nd, 2012 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2121 Cedar Hill Cross Road at 1:30 pm with reception following. Memorial gifts may be given to The Mustard Seed, 625 Queens Avenue or to Emmanuel Baptist Church, designated for Canadian Baptist Ministries.

To think of Emmanuel Baptist is to think of Kory Lewis.During my years as a member of Emmanuel, Kory was the cornerstone- fine-detailed event planning, leadership in too many areas to mention, office help and filled in when our office admin was away, launched projects, made certain our pastors were taken care of, supporter of missions, sat on boards.... Emmanuel and Kory were synonymous! The day I was baptized, she sat with me during the service, and after the baptism was the first person waiting to hug me in the hall even though I was dripping wet! She supported me when I was learning in my pastoral role and always had a kind word especially when I was hard on myself for my blunders. Kory is one of those people that you will remember for the rest of your life- and I will. May her spirit live on in all those who knew her.

My husband, Bill Murray, Morag Maclachlan and Kory (Gwen Turvey) started school in grade 1 together in Chilliwack and were pals all through grade 12. They lost contact with one another over the years but finally met up about ten years ago.
Morag had a cottage at Cultus Lake and Bill, Kory and I (as chaperon!) were invited to visit for a few days in the summer. This invitation extended every year until 2011 when Morag became ill. We enjoyed the company and all the reminiscence of school years, friends, life in the Chilliwack valley, etc.
Morag & Bill both passed away in 2011 age 90, now Kory 91.
I miss them all.

Kory Lewis

As an impressionable young teacher (about 1962) I first became aware of Kory when I attended the AGM of the BC Teachers Federation in Vancouver to which I was a delegate from the Chilliwack Association. My then school principal, Joy Batty (died this February), a lifelong friend of Kory's, was the connection. I recall that Kory was very kind to us “newbies”. As I continued my teaching career, I frequently heard Kory's name mentioned by Joy (Batty).

Then, years later, when I went to work at Carey Theological College (about 1980) in Vancouver, as the Administrative Assistant, there was Kory on the board of directors! So for several years saw her frequently when she came to board meetings. I might add that she never came empty handed – flowers, chocolates and so on. We loved her!

Another gap of years and now living in Ottawa, once again there was a crossing of paths (about 2007) when my niece, Joan Dosso, joined the staff at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Since then I was able to visit with Kory on two occasions when in Victoria to visit family. The last time was just before her 90th birthday when I saw her in action volunteering at the church.

It has been a privilege to have known Kory and to have benefitted from her influence.
