It certainly doesn't feel as if six years have passed since Sam died. Margery it is good to remember Sam from time to time. Best wishes.

I last saw Sam at the funeral of Major Craig Mills at Ingersoll. Everyone there for the funeral stayed in the same hotel and very swiftly a dinner was concocted by old comrades from the Guards and the RCR. Sam was in fine form that night. I sat beside him and we talked and carried on. A lot of fun. That is my last memory of Sam and its a good one. Tom Thorne, 3RCR

Dear Marjorie and family
My heart is with you, Canada lost an awesome soldier, an absolute gentleman, the day Sam left us.
I had the privilege to work with Sam over many years, here in Victoria, when we still had a Victoria Militia District, then at 11 (Ttraining) Brigade HQ in Vancouver, which saw subsequent name changes to BC District and 39 Brigade. A testament to his foresight to preserve the rich military history of the Reserve units here in BC was the establishment of the STAG (Senior Training Advisory Group) less affectionably known as the "Colonel's Platoon", to foster the rich military and community history of the various Militia units here in Victoria, when memories long fade. Sam was uniqeue among the many Regular Force Support Staff (RSS), in that he understood what makes Reservists into the Citizen Soldiers who answer the call to leave home, family and civilian jobs voluntarily, based on a phone call from their unit Orderly Room, to fight forest fires, fill sandbags during floods or shovel snow during ice storms, without being "ordered" to do so. Or to spend 8to 10months in Afghanistan, or Sudan, because in their heart, that is something they have to do.
Sam immersed himself in all that he did. He was a great friend, a mentor, who never shied away from any task, no matter how small or inconsequential.. But he thrived on complexity. Sam was a ray of sunshine amid the chaos, always a calming influence, always a smile on his face, always a story to tell. His musical talents , especially during mess dinners, well known.
Rest in Peace, Sam. Lest we forget

For those who didn't know Sam that well. He was always a perfect gentleman Officer, A true proffessional example for me and many others. He was a kind man and a caring man who took time out to mentor me, advise me and share testimony of his life in parables to keep me safe from my own youthful exuberance. Even after my troubles a couple of years ago he never lost faith in me and publicly made it known,. True courage, bravery, loyalty , dignity and decency. I will miss Sam terribly. We don't build "Gentleman Officers (Guards Officsr Sam would remind me), like we used to. I pray it is not i s not a dying breed. God bless you Sam. I will pray for you and for marjorie, and I will miss your ripping yarns.

Marjorie and family:
We were very sad to learn of Sam's death. We remember well his irrepressible good nature, not to mention his love of singing - especially Gilbert and Sullivan - when we were serving together in Germany with 2PPCLI. We count ourselves lucky to have seen you and him a couple of years ago when you came to Ottawa. All those traits were again on display, and we will treasure the memory.
We pray you will find comfort in knowing how many people he touched, and how many share your grief.

Marjorie and Family,

Both Tara and I had the honour of working for Sam in Whitehorse and Connaught. Sam was one of the best and most caring individuals we have ever had the chance to experience. He took both of us under his wing and taught us the true meaning of being an Officer and Gentleman.

Over the past few years we have drifted apart, but Lisa has kept us up to date.

We will express our personal feelings in Woodstock.

Canada and the MeckBach's have lost a great man.

Dear Marjorie, Stephanie, and John,

I first met Sam when we were both in Cadets, he in Ingersoll and I in Woodstock. We then served together in the Militia [Reserve] battalion of The RCR. Later in both our careers we crossed paths in the regular Army, in 3PPCLI, at Work Point Barracks.

Between those crossings, Sam appeared in notes and messages from friends, so I've never felt out-of-touch with him over all these decades.

He was a fine, fine man, and your loss is shared by so many who have been touched by his life over the years.

I am in the process of returning home to Woodstock, and will watch for news of his memorial service there.

I send my prayers and wish each of you every blessing as you walk this journey of grieving together.

Rest in peace, Sam ... a good and faithful servant you were.

I will be sending a donation to The Cadets in Sam's memory ... a perfect way to honour his service.
Brian
