Lyn DAVIS Obituary

Lyn (Evelyn Jean) Davis, born in Florida May 15, 1948, died unexpectedly October 24, 2023, in Victoria, following a brief illness.

Lyn loved learning her entire life. After 4 years at Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC, Lyn completed her BA at Florida Atlantic University and her MA and PhD at Florida State University. Following a long and successful career as a self-described policy wonk and consultant, Lyn at last found her true vocational love, teaching in the Faculty of Human and Social Development at the University of Victoria, where she was respected as a generous colleague and mentor. In 2014, she was named the most effective teacher in HSD.

Lyn always described becoming a Canadian citizen in 2005 was one of the best things she ever did for herself. An occasionally published poet and short-story writer, Lyn participated in many lesbian feminist groups throughout her adult life, financially supported a wide variety of progressive causes, and for more than 2 decades, hosted Big Broadcast at CFUV. Most notably, she was a proud crew member of the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival for 17 years.

She is survived by her wife, Patti Hupe, of Esquimalt, BC; her sons through a previous relationship, Chris Bailey of Atlanta, GA and Mike Bailey of Silver Spring, MD; her brother, Paul Davis of East Orleans, MA; and a circle of beloved framily, including Susan Strega and Joann Rosen of Victoria; Mela Brown of Vancouver; Judy Patrick of Boulder, CO; Jennifer Woodhull of Manitou Springs, CO; Linda Fowler of Asheville, NC; and her beloved crewmates at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival.

Patti and family extend enormous gratitude to staff in the Palliative Care Unit, Royal Jubilee Hospital, who treated Lyn with unfailing care, respect, and compassion throughout her transition.

A celebration of life will take place on Lyn's birthday in 2024. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a bursary Lyn established in Public Health and Social Policy at the University of Victoria.

My husband Peter, and I only just found out today that Lyn had passed away. I worked in the Dean´s Office at HSD and we had many great chats together. I loved her generosity and her wry sense of humour. A great person.
Apologies on the late condolences to her partner Patti and family.

What sadness for Lyn´s family and for all of us at Salem College who knew and loved her. Oh, how I miss communicating with Lyn. We had the opportunity to visit at our class reunions, and she always had news of her family, her achievements, and her adventures in her new home on Vancouver Island. (My grandmother lived in Nanaimo and met my grandfather in Victoria in 1915.) She will also be missed for her warmth and her smile.

This is terrible news.
I knew Lynn from Tallahassee and she was an incredibly nice person. I am so sorry to hear that she has passed. Prayers for Lyn, her family and friends.

My memories of Lyn are as a fellow volunteer at CFUV 101.9 FM, UVic's community radio station. For many years she shared her knowledge and humour on air and during organizing meetings. She was a tireless advocate in ensuring that the voices of women were heard at the station and on air. She was a dependable women's collective member who kept shows like Big Broadcast, fueled by lesbian artists, alive over the years.

Lyn was a friendly, wonderful colleague and professor. We first met when we hired Lyn to teach in the interdisciplinary graduate program Studies in Policy and Practice, at the University of Victoria, School of Human and Social Development. Lyn stepped in many times to teach courses, sometimes at the last minute. She taught with grace, discipline, and humour. She truly loved teaching, and she radiated the importance of learning about social policy. It was a privilege and a joy to work with her on the popular 4th year Policy in the Human Services course, on campus, and then at a distance. Lyn taught it online with care and delight for several years. My condolences to her framily and colleagues.

I´ll miss knowing Lyn is no longer on this planet. I shared a love of teaching with her & that twinkle in her eye when we silently acknowledged a shared view. It was good it WAS silent. To her family & friends who were family, my loving thoughts.

Lyn and I crossed paths at UVic where I was the Program Manager in the School of Public Administration, where she was a valued instructor. I recall chatting with her and always felt like I learned something during those encounters. My sympathy to her family and friends.

Knowing Lyn these past many years has been an honour and a privilege. Such a wise and compassionate woman. You will be missed so much Lyn but I know that you took comfort in knowing that your beautiful wife Patti will be surrounded by her loving family and friends during this most difficult time. Thank you for being such a good friend.

My most sincere condolences. Lyn was a rare bird. I admire her greatly. She was sweet but not sugary, strong but not hard. A very clever woman. I'm sad I will never speak with her again and very glad I knew her. She is a great example to me.

With deepest sympathies to Patti, Chris, Mike and Lyn's close family and friends. Lyn sat on the Program Committee and taught for several in the Social Justice Studies Program at UVic. She was most highly regarded by her students and colleagues. She will be deeply missed by many.

Lyn's generous love and kind mentorship through difficult times will stay with me the rest of my life. When I'm struggling, I'm going to ask myself, "What would Lyn do?" Maybe this way I can contribute a tiny bit to her already vast and incredible legacy. A legacy of inspiration, honour, empowerment, justice and love. And a good laugh whenever possible! Ha! :)
Sending love and light to all of us who feel the loss of this dear special soul.
May she rest in peace and power. <3
Blessed be.

I didn't know you but as a Womyn from Victoria, now living in TX, I am sorry we never met. Your life experiences sound wonderful. My heart hurts for your loved ones, especially your wife. May the beautiful memories you had together keep her strong.
