Maria Traa Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother and wife, Mia Traa, whose remarkable life spanned 87 years.

Mia was predeceased by her parents, Lydia and Joseph Verboeket, sister Theresa Day, and daughter-in-law Lorrilee Traa.

Mia will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 65 years Hank, sons, Peter, grandchildren Jason and Candace, Henry, daughter-in-law Jill, grandchildren Jennilee and Joey, Lawrence, grandchildren Mitchell and Morgan, Mike, daughter-in-law Michele grandchildren Hailee and Jordan; great grandchildren Presley, Violet, Penelope and Noelle.

Born in Roermond, Netherlands on May 7th, 1937 to Lydia and Joseph Verboeket.

Mia's early years in the Netherlands was greatly impacted by the occupation of Roermond by enemy forces during WWII. The memories of the occupation stayed with Mia her entire life.

Mia and her family immigrated to Canada in 1956 with her parents and sister and settled in Winnipeg in the St. Boniface area. Immigrating with her family as an 18 year old young lady was not without challenges as she left behind many friends and family members.

She met the love of her life, fellow dutchman, Hank, and married in Nov 1959 and enjoyed 65 years of marriage and raised four sons together.

She was an extremely talented seamstress, knitter, cook, baker, house manager and later in life a painter. She could sew and knit with such precision that you would not know that it was made right at her kitchen table with her own hands. Her handmade waffles at Christmas were legendary. She ran the household and raised four sons without ever a single complaint. Every evening, she would cook a meal that would rival any 4 Star restaurant. Lunches would be made and packed every evening for the entire household without fail.

Mia was very proud of the work that she did for elections Canada, and at one point was a Returning Officer in Winnipeg.

When Hank bought a gas station and started a mobile brake business, Mia then took on the role of bookkeeper and overall office manager of the businesses.

Mia lived her life her way with no regrets. When she heard the news of her cancer diagnosis, she managed it with courage and dignity. Our Mother was the original "Mamma Mia".

Rest in peace, love your family.

Loss of a loved one is never easy and made more difficult at this time of year. Sending strength and support to all of you. Hoping that the memories and many mementos of her artistic abilities (that she so generously shared) get you through this time. Rest in peace Auntie Mia.

Dear Henk and family
I was saddened to learn of Mia's passing. She was a dear friend to my parents and they shared many wonderful times together. I remember Mia doing crafts with the 'ladies' and dropping in for coffee with Henk at my parents' home.
She was a lovely person. My heart goes out to you as you mourn her loss.
Sincerely,
Monique (and Martin) Cain (Theo and Toos' daughter)

Uncle Hank, Peter, Henry, Lawrence and Mike - and family(ies), Auntie Mia will be in heaven for sure -doing needlepoint, knitting, or cooking or reading or collecting - my heart goes out to you all. When we lived in Lacey WA she insisted they stop by to see us on their way to California - Our girls took to Auntie Mia immediately and her lap became Claire's favourite place for the entire visit. She patiently helped Grace correct a crochet pattern (Grace was 6 :) ) and she pitched in to make dinner- her kindness for our kids continued when we visited a few years later - She did not hesitate to give our girls the time of their lives in her back yard and her kitchen- Thank you Auntie Mia- you will be missed.
