Marian Althea Williams
(née Boddington),
1928-2025
Marian Althea Williams, known to all as Anne, died peacefully on March 18, 2025, in Port Perry, Ontario. Born November 23, 1928 in Jogindernagar, north India, where her father was stationed with the British Army, Anne spent her early years in England, France, and Italy, returning to England only a month before the war started. She trained as a nurse at Middlesex Hospital in London, emigrating to Canada in the early 1950s with her husband, Dr. Ivor Williams and two small children.
Settling first in Ganges on Salt Spring Island, Anne assisted with Ivor's medical practice while raising their young family. She also founded the Salt Spring Island Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race, a spirited community tradition. After time in West Vancouver and two years in West Kirby, near Liverpool, England, the family made their home on a waterfront farm at Yellow Point, near Nanaimo. There, Anne embraced country life, tending a lively menagerie - including a toddler and a capuchin monkey - and managing hay fields, a vegetable garden, and a berry patch. She and her family explored the Gulf Islands and coastal inlets by boat, deepening her lifelong fascination with the Pacific Northwest's landscapes and wildlife.
After her marriage to Ivor ended, Anne moved to Victoria and married Charles Walls, an agriculturalist, with whom she travelled extensively. Anne often visited family in Australia, the U.S. and Ontario and made good friends wherever she went. Winters in Mexico saw her practicing her new proficiency in Spanish at the Manzanillo market, while summers were spent at her Saturna Island cottage. Anne and Charles were both active members of the Victoria Bowls Club. After Charles's death she reunited with Ivor, sharing an apartment overlooking the Salish Sea in Cadboro Bay for 30 years until his death in 2017. Her Yorkie, Pippin, was a loyal and loving companion.
In 2020, Anne moved to Shannon Oaks in Oak Bay, forming new friendships over bridge games and shared meals. Her final years were spent at West Shore Village in Port Perry, where "GeeGee" revelled in summers at Ballyduff Farm, tending great-grandchildren, ducks, and even a young crow.
Anne is lovingly remembered by her children, Margaret-Ann (Don DeBats, dec.), Simon (Kimmy), and Alison (Steven DeNure); her brother, John Boddington (Suzanne); grandchildren Thea & Grant, Lauren & Alessandra, Graham & Sylviane, Matti & Monika, Derek, Claire & Iain; many great-grandchildren; and members of the Boddington, Cohn, Crofton, DeBats, DeNure, Vega, Walls and Williams families.
Her family extends their gratitude to the staff at West Shore Village for their kindness and care in her final months.
