Mark Sondheim Obituary

SONDHEIM, Mark
His family is heartbroken to announce that Mark Weiss Sondheim, 72, of Victoria, British Columbia, passed away on January 18, 2023, of cancer, surrounded by family. He was born February 23, 1950, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He received degrees in Geology (Antioch College), Geomorphology (University of Toronto), and a PhD in Soil Science (University of British Columbia). He had a dynamic career in the BC and Canadian governments, universities, as well as private consulting, and is remembered as an innovator and a mentor to many. After coming to Canada for graduate school, he married the love of his life Kathy in 1975. He moved from Toronto to Winnipeg, then Vancouver, finally settling in Victoria. Mark was known for his generous spirit, warmth, and intelligence, and for his love of outdoor activities, including canoeing, kayaking, bicycling, and hiking. He was unfailingly generous with his time, supporting both family members and others in achieving their aspirations. Mark is survived by his wife Kathy, son Daniel and his partner Amie, daughter Alison and her partner Rhett, grandchildren Kai, West, Ezra, and Zoe, siblings Alan Sondheim and Margie Kelk, their partners Azure and Peter, nieces Joanna, Julia, and Laura, and nephew Ian. Mark was predeceased by his parents Norman and Evelyn. He made us all better people, and we will miss him.

Mark was a great guy, one of the most forward thinking and capable professionals I have worked with. Starting in the early 1980's in the Ministry of Environment he introduced many sections to the new computer mapping world. Surficial geology, soils, habitat and wildlife all benefited with new interpretive maps and data bases. Mark proceeded as a happy competent friend making our work much more accessible to users - he served our province admirably.
It was a privilege to know him.
