Martin DOHM-SMIDT Obituary

Martin (Torbin) Dohm-Smidt slipped peacefully away August 31, 2022 with his stepson Lars at his side. Born to Helene and Oscar Smidt May 30, 1935, in Nr. Nebel, Denmark, he is survived by his three children and 7 grandchildren, Melissa, husband Gary (Sean, Tyler & Faith), Mark (Sydney & Justin), and Ann (Caitlyn & Victoria). After living for over 40 years in Canada, he returned to his home country of Denmark and settled in Copenhagen for the last 21 years of his life, where he was able to reconnect with his brothers Trolls and Henning and their families.

Martin was a man of character, integrity, and service. He had an interesting life from working on the Royal Yacht for Lord Mountbatton, to the UN as a translator, as well as a CBC executive, to being a garbage man while attending the Vancouver School of Theology, and finally as an Anglican Minister. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh, sense of humor and the ability to help others see the best in themselves.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation.

Martin was such a caring individual. When I was young, he was our Minister and I fondly remember our theological discussions. He built a lovely community and I was lucky to have been part of it.
In the times when many churches were claiming the AIDS crisis was because God was punishing queer people, Martin continued preaching love and compassion for all. As someone who was secretly LGBTQ+, his kind words saved me more than he could know.
I'm happy Earth had him for so long. My condolences to friends and family.

The world has lost a treasure. Martin played a huge part in my spiritual growth and my boys grew up in the "church family" that he created in Victoria. We are all better people for having known him. Knowing that the world will not hear his loud, infectious laugh again saddens me. I send peace to his family and all those who loved him. God bless.
