Mary Parr Obituary
PARR, Mary (June) Grace (née Steele)
Born in Red Deer, Alberta - June 29, 1927
Passed away in Victoria, BC -
October 23, 2025
Our mom, June, was born into a close-knit farming community and attended a one-room schoolhouse, sometimes riding her beloved horse, Cloudy, to class.
After graduating from high school, she went on to earn her nursing degree at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary.
She met her husband, Harry, on a blind date in Calgary and initially thought he wasn't interested-until one evening, while waiting for a bus, she heard a familiar voice behind her say, "I lost your phone number." That moment began a lifelong partnership.
Mom and dad were married in Red Deer on November 25, 1950, and together raised four children - Margaret (Jim), Gordon (Donna), Pam (Ken), and Valerie (David).
When our dad's Royal Canadian Air Force career took the family to Metz, France, mom embraced the adventure. They travelled widely across Europe, with frequent visits across the Channel to see dad's family in England. She often said those were some of the happiest years of her life.
Upon returning to Canada in 1962, the family settled in Calgary for six years before finally making Victoria their home. Mom worked in a variety of roles, memorably managing Purdy's Chocolates at Hillside Mall, where her smile and warm laugh made her a favourite with customers.
Even after retirement, mom and dad continued their love of travel, exploring new places and visiting family and friends. In her later years, she lived at the Renaissance Retirement Residence, where she made many friends.
Our mom was known as a warm, sweet-natured and resilient person. She enjoyed good health the majority of her life but passed away at the end as a result of pneumonia and other complicating factors.
She was predeceased by her beloved Harry, granddaughters Tanya and Victoria, and brothers Clifford, Harold, Norman, and Ronald. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff on 7N at Victoria General Hospital for their compassionate care.
We love you and miss you, Mom.
