I just felt called to look Mr Howe up, as I was sharing with a work colleague he was one of the most influential teachers/directors in my young life. I sang in the mid 90's with Saanich district youth choir and we performed the opening and closing ceremonies for the Commonwealth games in '94. He was passionate, and inspiring - the world lost an incredible human. Thank you for spreading your light Mr Howe - living on in our hearts.

So sad to hear of Matthew's passing. I remember him in grade 6 when strings program teacher Tommy Tucker told him to join band and play a trumpet as he'd never get very far with a stringed instrument. How right he was! What an extraordinary talent and kind man. I remember how gracious he was to drive me to and from musical Theatre class at UVIC. I remember him performing at Butchart Gardens. I remember singing a duet with him...he on trumpet and me on voice at Victoria Baptist Church. Wonderful boy and man! Sad loss.

My arms are around at this time. Your son was a wonderful human being to so many. I can still see him visual running the line when he was a young boy at a soccer game. Also with the commonwealth choir.

Matthew wouldn´t remember me but I have never forgotten him. I was one of the 1,994 choir members for the Commonwealth Games opening and closing ceremonies and that is where I first saw Matthew earn the respect, devotion, and friendship of everyone in his radius. He was magic. If he had piped us into the river, we would have happily jumped in. Since that time, I have enjoyed following tidbits about his continued successes through newspaper articles and such. He was a star come down to shine on earth for a short time; how lucky we were to experience him.

The news of Matthews battle with cancer and his passing away hit us hard...
we met him in the mid 90s through his time at Claremont and we were instantly amazed with him , not only at his talents... and there were many... his genuine personality and his life as a Christian foremost took center stage...
i could not imagine anybody who would have met him and not instantly wanting to be friends..
there was nothing Matthew could not do or wouldn't tackle, he was an absolute perfectionist, gifted, giving, loving and caring, yet humble and living by his Christian values... he touched many, us included and he will be terribly missed by all who knew him..
his suffering has ended his new life just began..
we will meet again
with our deepest condolences

Our sincerest sympathies, Dennis and Helen, on the loss of a wonderful man. We renewed our long-term friendship a few years ago and have enjoyed emailing back and forth. He sent us a batch of cookies...and I found another amazing skill he had mastered. What a unique, can-do person Matthew has always been. Victoria will miss him. I sure do.

Matthew shared the magic of theatre with countless students and audiences. We were so blessed when he agreed to return from Minneapolis to teach and direct at the Canadian College of Performing Arts where the students learned and grew from his expertise, his experience and his encouragement. He instilled gifts in them to last a lifetime. His example of succeeding even despite physical limitations and of always smiling and working hard to achieve your dreams, will never be forgotten. Thank you, Matthew, from all of us who knew and loved you.

I was one of Matt's teachers at Marigold El. in the
70's. Our class did many skits over 2 years, but Matt
pretty well lead the group, not me. After we moved to Courtenay, Matt visited the Valley a few times, it was great to see him. I have followed his career since then.

I was so sad to hear the news of Matthew´s passing. Our paths met for a few years at UVic. Matthew was an inspiration to everyone that new him and the memories live on. No matter the obstacle, Matthew never gave up, never quit. I will cherish the memories of music theatre, university studies and The Masterblends with Matthew forever!

I´m sure that many of us felt like Matthew was a family member! He was such a treasure that he just HAD TO BE our brother, son, cousin, uncle.... Anything, so we could call him "ours!"
He often spent time at our home in Minneapolis, both visiting with us and house sitting while we traveled. He would only stay in our guest room, so we renamed it "Matthew´s Room," and that is what it shall remain!
We got to know him as our daughters teacher/mentor at CTC, but he quickly became our dear friend! Some wonderful meet ups in NYC as well as dinners at our home, and casual drop ins as he ran around the lake in our neighborhood. Some of the most amazing theater by young people, often left us sobbing, (Working,) or falling out of seats with laughter, or just incredulous at the talent he brought out of these young adults, (Cabaret, Company)
He really was that once in a lifetime treasure! His constant reference to his parents was so wonderful.
We love you Matthew!

Matthew inspired so many young people through his love of drama. Claremont High School was lucky to have him as a teacher. He would be proud of my daughter, Michelle, who is now an award-winning film-maker, thanks to Matthew's guidance when she was in his Musical Theatre class, Grades 10 - 12. Ah, those were the glory years!

This is very sad news. Although, I haven't seen Matt for many years. We had the best of times being band mates in Colquitz Jr High band. Amazing trumpet player. He was never not smiling. To this day, I can still hear your laughter. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. A monumental loss.

My deepest condolences to you Helen and Dennis. What a wonderful and talented human being you and God created in Matthew. I was blessed to have him live close by me a few years ago and be able to run into him and you around the neighborhood once in awhile. May God fill your hearts with His Peace knowing you will be reunited one day.
