Matthys du Toit Obituary
It is with great sadness that the du Toit family in Canada and in South Africa announce the death of Matthys Michiel Slabber du Toit on September 2, 2023 at the age of 90 from cancer.
He studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, then went on to the Royal College of Surgeons in London to specialize in Opthalmology. He was a partner in a practice in Calgary until 1983 and then moved to Vancouver Island to run his practice until retirement in the mid 1990s.
In 1959, Slabber met Daphne Wilson at Moorefields Eye Hospital in London, and they were married in 1960. They had 3 children - Michael, Andrew and Helen and shared 63 years of a wonderful life in the U.K. and Canada. He will be greatly missed by his immediate family, his grandchildren (Jared, Russell, and Lisa), and many beloved family members in South Africa, England, and Australia.
Besides being a very handy person with a sense of humour, Slabber had a wide variety of interests including cycling, pottery, woodworking (including lathe work and making furniture), classical and Opera music and singing in choirs. He also enjoyed giving back to his community with volunteer work in Victoria.
A private gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Palliative Care Ward of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital.
