I had the distinct pleasure to meet Migs at the 'Oak Bay Rec Centre' in Victoria, BC, where he later introduced me to his friend, Richard Reiter, who also became my friend. These fine gentlemen would join together to speak at various venues regarding their WW2 experiences and their perspectives, from opposing sides of that war. Clearly, Migs was a gifted leader and an exceptional and rare Canadian. His terrific sense of humour accompanied a natural ease which he shared with everyone he met. Migs would look you in the eye, he'd remember your name, and he'd make your moments with him special in their memory. I always felt in awe of this man and in that, I certainly am not alone. "Rest in peace, Migs." Thank you. Bless you.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Migs when I interviewed him several times for a magazine profile earlier this year. I was fascinated to learn about his incredible life story and when the article was published, he graciously invited me back to Carlton House for drinks and dinner to celebrate. I will remember his as a kind soul, a distinguished leader and a true gentleman of integrity. He cared deeply about people and clearly loved his family, his community and his country. Migs was one of those special people whom one always remembers fondly. My sincere condolences to Diana and the rest of the family.

Migs was a fellow Naval Commander as was my father, Harry Shorten. When my dad passed he wished to have his ashes scattered at sea and I turned to Migs, although we had only met twice to help me find the right departments to make the arrangements on the Kootenay which my Dad had been with. Migs led me through the process, who to contact and when the time came was with us as we left Vancouver and arrived at Esquimalt. The burial went perfectly and all of the ship's crew were so respectful, the Chaplin perfect and we could not have done it without Migs and his quiet assistance, and sense of humour.
My thoughts are with his family at this sad time for them.
