Prof. Mike Ashwood-Smith died peacefully at the age of 93 on August 17th at Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Victoria, BC.
Mike was born in London, England in 1932. Growing up he excelled academically and completed a PhD in Molecular Biology at the University College London. During his time at university he met Barbara Spencer-Jones, a pharmacist, and they married in 1956. They were later blessed with three children, Martin, Peter, and Hannah.
After moving to Canada in 1969, Mike took on the role of Professor of Biology at the University of Victoria where he taught for many years. Mike became known for his research in cell cryogenics, and his published work contributed to advancements in many fields including assisting with freezing techniques for early IVF (at Bourne Hall, Cambridge), preservation of stem cells, bone marrow and corneal implants. His research findings also resulted in the removal of harmful cancer agents from some sunscreens. Through his work Mike made a significant contribution to population health.
Mike was an intelligent, complex man with a great sense of humor and numerous interests including passions for travel, fishing, boating, good food and fine wine. He will be dearly missed.
Mike is survived by his wife Barbara, his children Martin, Peter (Guylaine), Hannah (James), his grandchildren (Simon, Tristan, and Meghan), and his sister-in-law Rosemary, and niece Karen.
