Michael Burr Obituary

BURR, Michael June 18, 1951 June 26, 2011 With hearts filled with happy memories, we sadly announce the sudden loss of Michael Burr. On his way to a fishing adventure with good friends in Mexico, Michael passed peacefully in University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, with his family and fiancee by his side. He leaves behind his children Imogen, Stephanie (Damon), Samuel, grandson Walker, beloved fiancee Mary Dalsin, brother David, sister Kathryn (Gary), the mother of his children Georgia Gibbs, and many well loved nephews. Newly retired, Michael enjoyed a successful career in commercial real estate and property management. He was a two-term past President of the Victoria Real Estate Board and served on both the Heritage and Advisory Design Committees at Victoria City Hall. A passionate fisherman and avid boater, he took special pleasure in living just outside the lines. An excursion with Michael was an adventure exciting, occasionally life-threatening, always a good time. He loved the outdoors and was ever eager to confront the challenges he found there with determination and a wry sense of humour. Often, those challenges were met on the deck of his Boston Whaler. Through his great sense of compassion, Michael sought to ease the load of others, especially those who lived on the margins of life. It was this instinct that led him to New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina armed with supplies, and ready to lend his efforts to make a difference in someone else's life. Michael's sound advice, kindness and generosity of spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him. A celebration of Michael's life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Victoria Hospitals Foundation ( www.victoriahf.ca ) for use in the Pacemaker Clinic at the Royal Jubilee Hospital (c/o Dr. Richard Leather) and/or the Pacific Salmon Foundation ( www.psf.ca ). Keep your rod tip up, Mikey! 631145

Michael was indeed a gentleman and a kind soul with a zest for life. I enjoyed chatting with him while renting office space in his lovely 'heritage'building on Fort Street a few years ago. I am sorry for your loss. May fond memories warm your hearts and keep him ever near.

Good Bye Michael... (Dad #2!)
You were a great father to all your kids and dealt with Imogen and I getting into trouble as teenagers!

You will be deeply missed and will forever be loved. I hope you see my Mama in heaven. Until we meet again.
Love,
Trisha

I have a wonderful memory of Michael.
The last time I saw him, he was playing with his grandchild in Beacon Hill park. Mary was there and his daughter Stephanie. The sun was shining. It was mid-September, a truly gorgeous day. He seemed happy and relaxed.
I'm so glad I ran into him that day! It's how I will remember him...

I am saddened by the very surprising news of Michael's passing. I ran into him recently at Pure Vanilla on Cadboro Bay Road. He was hail, hearty and gracious as he always was on those occasions when we bumped into each other. This was only days, certainly no more than a week or two, before his passing, which makes it all the more surprising. My heartfelt condolences to Michael's family, loved ones and friends.

Although not seeing Mike in many years, I am saddened to hear of his passing. We had lots of laughs in the old days, at school and Uvic and Shawnigan. My condolences to David and all the family.

Michael was a dear, dear friend who always made me laugh with his oh so charming whit and wisdom.
- When we were teenagers he was the most fun to be with.
- When we worked together living with difficult teens he was always there as a strong disciplinarian and the greatest support. But he could always find time to have fun and go fishing :) no matter what!
- As adults, he warmed my heart with his friendship and I so enjoyed the far too few times we spent together. My deepest sympathy to his family and his fiance the wonderful Mary who made him so very happy.

Having worked for the Burr family for over five years during the 1980s, and for Michael specifically during those years, I send my heartfelt condolences. As you have written, Michael was a dear, special man, and his memory will always bring a smile to both of our faces. His zest for life and his care and connections with those around him were a pleasure for us to enjoy and to learn from.

Sincerely, Patty and Doug Cassels
