Michael Low Obituary

Low, Michael Charles (Mike)

On October 24, 2015, Mike died suddenly, as a result of a fall, while hiking and photographing near Pemberton, B.C.

Mike is survived by his parents Elizabeth and Charlie Low, his sister, Susan Low, (Robert Nyst), in Victoria, and his grandparents Madeline and Roy Johnson in London, Ontario. He also leaves aunts and uncles Larry and Ruth Johnson, Martin Low (Jane Anido), and Linda and Hal Kalman and several cousins.

Mike was born in Guelph, Ontario on September 12, 1966. He grew up in Nanaimo and attended Quarterway School, Woodlands, and NDSS. He loved Scouts, Venturers, Dungeons and Dragons and lots of outdoor activities. After courses at Malaspina College, Mike graduated from UBC.

Mike loved being outdoors and spent much of his spare time hiking, snowshoeing, cycling and taking marvellous pictures of his adventures. He had many friends from his time on the Island and his years in Vancouver. He will be particularly missed by Eric Smiley (and Eric's sons Sebastian and Garreth), Rob Gaudet and Allison Felker, and Matthew Bissett as well as friends from work, his theatre and artistic pursuits and his various outdoor activities.

Mike worked as crew chief/ site superintendent for Kitchens by Design in North Vancouver and was highly regarded both for his skill and his reliability by Ron Luther, Ron Evans, and their clients.

A Memorial Service for Mike will be held in Victoria on Saturday, November 7 at the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific, 505 Quayle Road from 2:00 to 4:00 and Matthew Bissett will host a wake at his home in Vancouver on Saturday, November 14.

Anyone wishing to make a donation in Mike's memory is encouraged to consider Pemberton SAR, who found his body, or to Whistler SAR whose volunteers recovered him, or to Keith Flavelle Memorial Hut Society who manage the hiking hut where Mike spent his last night.

I knew Mike through Matthew Bissett. I haven't seen him for a few years, but always loved running into him around east Van, he always had a sparkling grin for me, and he was a great audience for my jokes. His big laugh and wonderful voice are clear as a bell in my mind. I am so very sorry to know I won't hear him again. My heartfelt condolences to all who loved Mike, a dear human indeed.

I am grief-stricken by the passing of a great man. I don't remember seeing him after my accident at twenty but my memories of him in youth from all of his schools, Ventures, D&D, are the fondest. Our time in scouts left us all with a supreme appreciation and respect for nature. I think he passed perusing something he loved and I can think of no better way to go.

I am so sorry for your loss. Although Michael and I only knew each other in our younger years. I wanted to send my prayers and share some memories from our years on Bear Street. I remember riding our tricycles around the court. Hunting hides hung over the fence. I will never forget Michael for throwing a rock at me, still have the scar in the middle of my forehead. Not that it's a bad thing. I think he secretly liked me. Hehe! I threw one back at him and boy did I get in trouble! I will always remember the amazing friendships we made in that wonderful community. That was an unforgettable time in our lives. Many long lasting friendships were made and Michael will be in our memories forever. My hope is that he didn't suffer and passed doing something he loved to do. He will be missed. Please keep a part of my heart with you to help with this grief and healing process. I am sorry I can't be with you for the celebration of his life. But my thoughts and prayers are with you all. All my love.

Elizabeth, Charlie and Susan: my deepest sympathy for your loss. I think I may have only met Mike once or twice over the years, but I very much admire his sense of adventure and love of the outdoors and the mountains. Our thoughts are with you at this very difficult time.
