Michael Campbell-Moore Obituary

CAMPBELL-MOORE, Michael Gibson (formerly Moore) January 16, 1944 - November 16, 2016 The Story-man has told his last tale. Michael was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 16, 1944 to Betty and "Mike" Moore, and died November 16, 2016 in Hospice after two years of living with cancer. As a young child he moved with his family to Truro, Nova Scotia; then later to Calgary, Alberta and finally to Coquitlam, B.C. where he got his Teaching Certificate at UBC. Michael began his teaching career in Tofino, BC. in 1966; taught in Courtney and then taught in the Sooke School District for over 30 years. Michael was a very good teacher and used storytelling to get his students interested in learning. He was an avid environmentalist, and years before it was popular to be environmentally friendly, he taught his students about composting using a worm farm which came home with him for all school vacations. He loved reading and writing poetry; the arts; walking in the outdoors; gardening; birdwatching; studying history and weather patterns - he could often better predict the weather than forecasters themselves. He loved a good game of crib and most of all loved to share his great wealth of knowledge. Michael had a story for every situation that came his way. He was an avid reader, often reading up to five books at the same time. He was a lifetime learner and was happiest writing an essay at University. Michael had a great sense of humour, and cared deeply for those he loved. He saw it as his mission in life to look after and support his family, while giving them the freedom to be themselves. Michael is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Merle; his children, Kathleen Moore, Ken (Allison) Moore, Jonothan Moore, and Brandon Campbell-Moore; his grandchildren, Arlen and Madeleine; and his brother Greg (Betty-Anne) Moore. Michael is also survived by very dear friends, Jack and Sandy Roberts, and Genevieve Singleton; and his buddies, Rupert and Lucky. A special thank you to Dr. Gary Neilson and the doctors; nurses; staff and volunteers at Hospice for their wonderful and loving care, and to the community of love known as the Two Saints Ministry. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's, Lakehill Anglican Church at 3939 St. Peter's Road (off Quadra Street across from The Keg Restaurant.) Please note that St. Peter's is a scent-free building, please leave scented products at home so the health of the family is not impacted. This is a celebration of Michael's life, to honour him please wear your brightest colours - no black. Donations in Michael's name may be made to Lifetime Networks, 102 -4090 Shelbourne Street, Victoria, B.C. V8N 4P6 to the Peter van Rheenan Memorial Fund for bursaries and scholarships. I greatly enjoyed working with Mike over the years, first as a fellow teacher and later as Principal of John Muir. He was a talented, resourceful and irrepressibly energetic educator and colleague but, above all, he was a profoundly caring and empathetic human being. He will be missed by many and forgotten by none. My thoughts are with you, Merle, and with all of Mike's family.

I am so very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I worked with Mike for many years at John Muir School - our classes were "buddies". Mike was a buddy to me as well - always kind and caring with a unique sense of humour and many stories to tell ! He was proud of and dedicated to his family and spoke of them often to me. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I taught at John Muir School in Sooke for many years with Mike. He was a huge positive presence in the school and came back as a TOC frequently after he retired. "Mr.CM" as the kids called him could always be counted on to step in when you were sick, rarely needed a day plan and could entertain a class of 5 year olds all day with his stories. He was a big teddy bear of a guy, a gentle giant. My sincere condolences to Merle and his family.

It's been a few years since we last saw Mike but even then it was the same upbeat happy greeting we always received from Mike. We both taught with Mike in Sooke and when we think of his classes we always picture the hallways full of the "forts" he had the kids make with wood and glue. He encouraged a lot of engineers in so many ways and then there were his "science experiments" which the students loved. A story teller he was and he had a lot of experience and knowledge behind those stories. Yes, he will be missed as there's too few "Mike's" around.

An expected but very sad day. We will miss him dearly and take comfort in knowing the pain is gone and he is now entertaining everyone in Heaven with his stories.
