Michael De Montmorency Obituary

Suddenly, after a courageous struggle with multiple health issues. Predeceased by his parents Brian and Margaret, Mike leaves his three loving sons, Daniel (Ninfa), Kelly and Stefan (Tassia) and siblings Marian Taylor (Joe) and Richard de Montmorency (Wendy) and grandson Milo, as well as an uncle, cousins and nieces.
Mike grew up in Victoria and apprenticed in carpentry. He was a very skilled craftsman and built many beautiful pieces of furniture over the years. At a time, when the construction industry was slow, Mike took up work for the Glendale Lodge Society where he worked for 8 years caring for residents with special needs. After the birth of his son, Daniel in 1987, he left Glendale to pursue his passion for gardening. After studying at the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific, he embarked on his longtime gardening business in Oak Bay, until his retirement in 2019.
He was passionate about the outdoors and especially loved the hiking and canoeing trips he did with his brother. He relished the many camping holidays the family took around BC and Alberta. He was very involved in his boys' sports and coached them all in soccer and baseball. Mike was an avid reader and a keen student of history. He was a car enthusiast and enjoyed owning and maintaining several sports cars.
Celebration of life; Tuesday December 23, 4-6 PM, 4--389 Tyee Road.

Mike was one of the original members of the "Rosedale Park gang" located near Strawberry Vale Elementary School. This small group grew in numbers through the high school years and several of us still stay in contact more than five decades later.

In around 1976, Mike, Brian M., Cliff B. and I overloaded my dad´s 1970 Bel-Air with two canoes on the roof and a trunk full of camping gear and headed up to Barkerville for a weeklong 116-kilometre canoe trip around Bowron Lake. This trip will always be etched in my memory as one of my truly greatest adventures.

Several years ago, Rick Z. or John G. or whoever, I can´t remember, came up with the idea that our old gang should get together once or twice a year at the Six Mile Pup to hang out and catch up on old times. On November 15th, the last time we met a couple weeks ago, Paul P. showed up for the first time since we started this reunion gathering. Mike´s name came up in conversation. Paul kept in touch with Mike over the years and said he would reach out to see if Mike could join us next time. Ironic timing...

Next time we gather, Mike will be there in our hearts as we raise a glass in his memory.

Condolences to his family.

We have many fond memories on Mike from when our boys were young. Scott recalls the Three Amigos camping trip that involved fathers and sons Stefan, Derek, and Wesley. He was also a great travelling companion on our trip to France and Italy. He passed far too young and our hearts go out to Stefan, Kelly, and Daniel as well as Jocelyn, his partner for significant part of his life. Rest in peace, Mike.

I was shocked when Richard sent me a text about Mike´s passing. I went to school with Mike and we were part of a group of clowns that hung out at Rosedale park back in the 70´s and 80´s . I always thought of mike as the leader of the pack. We all shared a lot of adventures and a lot of laughs, never a dull moment. RIP my old friend.

My Dad was the biggest influence in my life growing up. He taught me everything I know about nature and the outdoors, and he´s the reason for my love of cars. The ski trips he took me on as a kid are what made me fall in love with spending time in the alpine and on the ski hill. He coached me in basketball, baseball, soccer, and in life. I´m grateful for every memory. I love you, Dad.

I am sad to hear of Mike's passing. We ran together as young men taking in all the adventures life offered. He will be missed.

I was very sad to hear that Mike had passed away while still young. I always admired his ability to take on any construction or repair project with such skill. I will miss his keen sense of humour, as well.
