Michael Devries Obituary

DEVRIES, Michael W. February 20, 1963 - March 3, 2019 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden and unexpected death of our son Michael, who passed away peacefully of natural causes. He is survived by his loving family, and will be greatly missed by his parents, Vincent and Corine, his sister Denise (Brad), their children Alexa (Cody), Sam (Tannyce) and Jack (Courtney), his brother Robert (Voula) and their son Gabriel, as well as our large extended family and many dear friends. Michael had an infectious laugh and the best sense of humour, as well as a kindness that was truly unrivalled, finding time and compassion for everyone. The world is a lesser place without the qualities that Michael shared with us everyday. There will be a celebration of his life at the Royal Colwood Golf Course on Sunday, March 17th, from 1-3pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favourite charities, as Michael would have wanted; Victoria SPCA and Mustard Seed were two of his favourites.

I was deeply saddened to hear of my cousin Micheals sudden passing. The world is now a lesser place as a result of this for Mike had a larger than life heart which exuded compassion and kindness by the bucket loads and a sense of humour and laughter which was quite infectious in an awesome way! I will miss him dearly until we meet again and I feel very comforted by this during this time of great sadness. My Deepest condolences to all the DeVries family for their loss and we send much love your way.

My Heartfelt Sympathy to all the family in the loss of someone Special in their life.
I was one of the many privileged to have known Mike while working at the Ministry of Health. Truly a genuine guy, very kind, nice to chat with and of course have a good laugh.
I also share my sorrow with Mike's co-workers. I know you will miss his presence. We will all share a laugh with Mike again one day.

I am saddened to hear that Mike has passed. I met Mike at work and over the years we discovered we shared similar interests. He was honest, kind, generous, funny and a good friend. I regret not going to Cowichan lake to visit in the summer. Mike would do anything for others and never asked for anything in return. He had a good soul. See you on the beach My friend.

I worked with Mike for over 30 years and it was an honour and privilege. He had the biggest heart and was a very kind soul. My heart is heavy knowing Michael is no longer amoung us but he will always have a special place in all our hearts. Sending our love and prayers to the family.

A classmate and friend way back to Monterey Elementary. I remember countless hours with Mike and the gang at Windsor Park or the Oak Bay Marina or so many other childhood haunts. His sense of humour was as keen as his laugh was infectious.

I worked with Mike for many, many years; we were co-workers together in the trenches ducking the mortar fire of changing political landscapes, balancing client service with production needs, and navigating the fine line of interpersonal relationships and administrative hierarchy found in any office experience. Mike kept his humour and compassion, suffering fools with his dry wit and banter. He hurt whenever there was media news about human suffering. He had a heart as big as his stature if not bigger, and never lost his keen sense of fairness. We worked a lot of overtime together and while his health deteriorated he continued to give 100% inspiring me personally. Mike worked side jobs landscaping as a change from sitting at a desk and took great care and pride in his fastidious perfection making things neat, even if his desk wasn't. When my own lawnmower died he brought one over to my house for free. That's the kind of guy he was. I know you are sitting on a beach somewhere on the other side now, sipping a cool one, resting in peace, your merriment echoing for eternity.

I worked with Mike for many years and sat beside him for a long time before I retired. We had so many good laughs together. He always remembered to bring me some of hi mom's canned salmon. He was such a generous kind soul, never had a bad word to say about anyone. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
