Michael GOODGER Obituary

We regretfully announce the passing of Michael "Mick" Joseph Goodger after a long battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his spouse Angela Lucia and daughter Laura Collings at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Born in Leicester, England, Mick's journey in education began at Loughborough University, leading to his first teaching role in the Bahamas. His encounter with Canadians there inspired his move to Vancouver in 1977. Mick's career in Canada included positions at Camosun College, Northwest Community College, the University of Saskatchewan, and a 20-year tenure at St. Andrew's Regional High School.

In retirement, Mick continued his love for sports, refereeing volleyball, and joining the Cedar Hill Golf Club, where he served on the Board. Mick was proud of his family, cherished golfing with his buddies, and will be remembered for his gentle nature and quick sense of British humour. His life was filled with travel, poker nights, cheering on Leicester City FC, and moments with his beloved dog, Paddy.

Mick is remembered by his spouse Angela; brother John (Christine), nephew Alex; daughter Laura (Ian); stepdaughters Carla (Jesse), Erin (Josh); and five grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a warm spirit that touched everyone he met.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Island Health Saanich nursing staff, BC Cancer Clinic, and Royal Jubilee Hospital staff for their exceptional care during Mick's illness.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Mick's honour in Spring 2024. Mick's presence in our lives will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

I was saddened to hear of Mick's passing. I first met Mick when he coached me in soccer back when I was 18. I really enjoyed his coaching style and learned a lot from him. He had a very positive impact on me. Over the years, I would often run into him at volleyball games and tournaments where he was refereeing and I was coaching. I always enjoyed our chats before and after games. I loved his wonderful sense of humour and gregarious nature. A great fellow! He will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

A great Friend and competitor. His greeting for myself in his best British form "Arrowld" never once changed from the day I met him. He put in many hours for his golfing friends with the Cedar Hill Golf Club and will be truly missed. R.I.P. Mick you earned it.

I was shocked to hear of Mick's passing! I spent many happy hours refereeing volleyball matches. It did not matter where I happened to allocate his services - he was aways happy to oblige. He will be dearly missed on and off the volleyball court!

Mick and I weren't famous friends, we were simply a couple of guys that happened upon one another in a few rounds of golf. My daughter also new and enjoyed Mick from Reynolds school. We were casual acquaintances at best...I will always remember Mick for his humour, good nature and iron grit competitiveness. He was a true man's man. During last year's Club Championship, Mick road alongside me for 9 holes, I was blessed and inspired by his company. Thank you Mick, for that and all the other moments of enjoyment you afforded me in the last few years. My sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

We are saddened to hear of Mick´s passing and send our sincere sympathy to his family. Mick was truly a wonderful friend who always made time for others. I have fond memories of adventures with Mick, particularly our Saltspring adventure in my Westie. Refereeing volleyball games with Mick was a pleasure. Playing golf and tennis with Mick was always lots of fun.
Rest in peace, Gacker, you will be missed.
