Michael Kelly Obituary

KELLY, Michael
1947 - 2026
Mike passed away in early February. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years Eva, daughter Tina, stepson Peter (Vicky), grandchildren Brandon, Katelyn & Jocelyn, sister-in-law Diane & niece Dana. He was predeceased by his brother Kerry (2014) and his son Kerry (2025).

Mike was born to Joe and Mabel Kelly and raised in Victoria. He joined the Saanich Fire Department in 1973 and retired as a Captain after a 30-year career. There were many notable calls during his career including delivering a baby (parents gave their son the middle name Michael), accompanying a family on an emergency flight to Vancouver after a child's lawn mower accident, and handling a large structure fire at Camosun College. Early in his career, he received special recognition for assisting an injured driver in an overturned vehicle while off duty; he remained inside the vehicle comforting the driver until emergency services arrived and the extraction was complete.

A highlight of retirement was annual road trips with Eva to the South West, primarily Scottsdale, Arizona, where he enjoyed sun, golf, good food & Coors Light.

Like his mother, Mike loved all animals. He was happiest with a dog in his lap and wildlife in the yard. He documented the visitors - hawks, eagles, owls, mink and many others - through photography, with truly stunning images. His grand-dog Winston was a favourite buddy.

Along with photography, Mike enjoyed stained glass (in his younger years) like his brother, artist Kerry Joe Kelly, and woodworking like his father Joe, all projects tackled with care and precision. He enjoyed fishing & golfing (Cedar Hill & Uplands Golf Clubs) and was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan.

Mike was a quiet and introspective man, often more content to sit and take things in, rather than joining the conversation. His love language was service; he was always willing to take on a task or provide a helping hand whenever one was needed. He was kind and caring, as shown in his career choice and his love of family and animals. Those close to him had the pleasure of experiencing his cheeky sense of humour that continued to show itself even in his last months.

In the last several years, Mike had not one but two devastating diagnoses. So lastly, for Mike, take a moment to thank a firefighter. The impact of their work doesn't end when the call is over. The consequence of what they face for us can affect them long after they've left the scene.

In lieu of flowers, donations to an animal charity of your choosing is appreciated.

We love and miss you Mikey/dad.

We lived next door to the Kelly´s when we were kids with our parents being the best of friends. Our Dad´s built a tent trailer together and both families enjoyed may summers towing it around BC. Birthday parties at the Kelly´s Cordova Bay water front home will always be a cherished memory. My brother Russ and I would often drop by to say hello to Mable. One of those cherished family friendships that we all enjoyed

Sad news to hear. Mike was a likeable character, who I met in the late 70's ,we had some laughs. Many firefighters would sometimes like to have a cool one and we heard many a story along the way. Loved his golf too. A man with many talents his stained glass work was impressive. If I remember correctly we were both Habs fans and I had heard that he made a piece with the Canadiens logo?
Oddly enough years later I met his son who I thought was a neat and talented kid too. My condolences to all of Mike's family and friends. Mike was a good guy.
Cheers ! Mike you will be missed. I'm sure your having a laugh with a lot of those characters we all laughed with back in the old TH days. Again my sincere condolences to all family and friends. Cheers ! LesF

Sad to read of the passing of Mike today as he was truly one of the good guys that played golf at Cedar Hill going back some 50 years ago. I enjoyed many rounds of golf and beers with Mike back then and always ended with a smile from Mike. My thoughts go out to Eva and the entire family at this time. Rest in Peace

Eva and family, my sincere condolences go out to you all.
I met Mike at Uplands golf course through Bruce Rands (Randsy).
We played a lot of golf together and had a great time with him on a couple of golf road trips.
He did enjoy his Coors Light, and it was always a fun time with him after golf with lots of chatter and stories.
Rest in peace Mike.
Your pal,
Dean Stokes
