Michael McNeely Obituary

McNEELY, Michael Douglas Dick BSc, MD, FRCPC April 26, 1944 August 20, 2009 Dearly beloved husband to Joan and father to Lesley (Duncan McLaren) and Ross (Angie Jacques). Proud grandfather (Poppa Mike) to Finnbhar, Guthrie, Oonagh, Aleka and Scarlett. Michael is also survived by his mother, Marion, his sister, Martha and his brothers, Lennox and Bruce and their families. He is predeceased by his father Ross. Michael passed away after a long struggle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. The superb medical care he received allowed him to have many especially happy years at the end of his life and to see three more precious grandchildren born. Michael was a proud graduate of the University of Manitoba, faculty of Medicine (1969), as was his father before him. Mike and Joan married during medical school and Joan completed her MSW also at the U of M. They then went on to Hartford, Connecticut where Mike completed his Fellowship in Medical Biochemistry. They then returned to Toronto where Mike worked at Mt Sinai Hospital for a few years before returning to Victoria in 1974 to join his father at Island Medical Laboratories. Michael had a distinguished medical career as a Medical Biochemist at Island Medical Laboratories and later at MDS Metro (now LifeLabs). He made many important contributions to his field and received distinguished service awards from both his Canadian and American colleagues. He was a pioneer in the field of Medical Informatics and made some of his most important contributions here. He was also very generous with his time and was an excellent teacher and mentor to many students, colleagues, and employees. Michael also gave generously to his community as President of the YMCA Board, the Victoria Medical Society Board and serving on the Multiple Sclerosis Society Board. He particularly supported the United Way of Victoria and served for many years on their Fund Raising Committee. He also was an excellent artist and a good musician and always supported the Arts in Victoria. A service to commemorate his life will be held in late September. The details of this service will be announced later. In lieu of flowers it was his wish that donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada to support their research. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the McNeely
family. I had the honor of working directly with Mike at
Island Medical Labs. It was my first time as a supervisor and
I relied on him heavily for advice. He was a very caring
and considerate individual and a true mentor to me.
I was very saddened to hear of him passing away.

My sympathies to the family. I have fond memories of working in Island Medical Labs and, for a short time, being one the the managers. I respected, admired and genuinely liked Mike and look back to that being one of the 'good times'. He was a good leader and a gentleman!

Dear Joan and family,
Our thoughts have been with you and your wonderful extended family and we wanted to express our deepest sympathy. At the medical reunion in September, you were both in the hearts and minds of everyone there. There was a huge gap in the old stories and songs without Mike there helping to lead the fun with Cal & Earl. And all through the evening event, there were scrolling photos from previous reunions with you & Mike smiling, performing and creating the memories dear to all our hearts. You were both sorely missed. Mike was a very kind, funny, endearing man. We just hope that all the extra special memories created in the last years with all your children and grandchildren are helping you through your loss. We will see you at the memorial.

I knew Mike at MDS Metro in Victoria and he took the time to encourage me to go after what I want. Some people in his position expect respect - Mike earned respect. I was very sad to hear of his passing and have thought about him many times since. He had such a positive impact in my professional life and I will never forget him. My condolences to all.

Dear Joan and Family;
I am saddened to learn of Mike's death. He was a very important member of my profession and a very kind individual. I have known him since my arrival in British Columbia in the early 80's and have worked with him on various projects during that time. However, I particularly remember his welcoming to me when I moved to Victoria in recent years. I have not found that British Columbia is an incredibly hospitable place so I really appreciated his friendliness.
