Michael Owens Obituary

OWENS, Michael Lawrence Age 77 years, passed away suddenly at sea on July 15, 2005 while in the company of his immediate family during a 50th wedding anniversary Alaskan cruise. In his own words, this trip with his family was "the highlight of my life. " He will remain forever in the hearts of his beloved wife of 50 years, Agnes; his devoted children, Michael, Nancy, Betty Ann and Bernie; his sons-in-law, Paul and Bruce and daughtersin-law, Rosemary and Judy; his pride of grandchildren, Jillian, Cameron, Christopher, Jamie, Tyler, Maya and Delaney. Mike is also survived by his sister, Laura Lachance, and two brothers, Pat and Ossie Owens. Born in Chalk River, Ontario, Mike lived an exceptional life and will always be remembered with great love for his sense of fun, humour and spirit, his kind heart and his strong sense of integrity. Mike loved life, lived it to its fullest and gave us all wonderful examples of how to live our lives in honest and principled ways. He reminded us that family should always be the number one priority in our lives. During his lifetime, Mike embarked on a number of careers, first working for the CPR, then joining the Canadian Navy (Naval Air) where he remained for 22 years and where he developed many lifelong friendships. Upon leaving the services, Mike enjoyed a career in computer programming, working first at Transport Canada and then at Agriculture Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. Mike retired as Director of Computer Systems at Agriculture Canada in the mid 1980s. A Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22 at Yates Funeral Home, Parksville, B.C. Prayers will be held at 5:00 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension, Parksville. This will be followed by a second Visitation at the Church until 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 23 at the Church of the Ascension, 887 Wembley Road, Parksville. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In celebration of the Owens family's Catholic faith, Mass cards would also be appreciated. Yates Funeral Service and Crematorium, 1-877-264-3848, in care of arrangements. 119963

Agnes and family - Mike was such a special person. I have so many good memories from our times at work in Transport and Agriculture computer services - his fine example, leadership, mentoring, support and humour!

I have treasured your continuing warm friendship to our family. That salmon fishing trip with Mike remains a special memory for Heather, who was 7 when we visited you on Vancouver Island.

I met the Owens family in Ottawa as a friend of a friend and quickly become ‘one of the family’. Although the years and the distance have separated us, I still think back with pleasure about many an evening that I spent there. Mr. O was one of a kind, he could always be counted on for his stories, wisdom and kindness. He will be missed.

Mickey, Bob (Suds) Sutherland and I joined the Navy on the same day. We met in Toronto waiting for the train West for Naden. For over 57 years we remained friends and kept in touch. Mickey and I spent some memorable occasions together. I was visiting Mickey's home in Chalk River the day the atoms ran wild at the nuclear plant. The local hotel was full of workers in white coveralls who had vacated the plant. I went to France with Mickey as his interpreter (ha! ha!) when he visited the grave of his brother at the military cemetery at Brettville-sur-Laize.I took the picture of him kneeling beside the tombstone. That was a very emotional moment for Mickey and for me. I am sure you have all heard the story about the lack of hotel rooms in Caen. The innkeeper's wife found us a place and we didn't find out until next morning that we were the only males sleeping in a home for unwed mothers. What a hoot!. While in Paris we toured Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower where I had my first drink of champagne as we helped a young Canadian couple celebrate their first wedding anniversary. Despite my lack of skill, Mickey and I were bridge champions on the Maggie on one of several cruises we took. Mickey and I both have had 29 hands in cribbage, both dealt by Suds. We had great times together as you all have had. If we hold those great memories in our hearts, Mickey will never be far away. Sincerely Frank Dowdall and Frona

We will always remember Mick's ready smile, his endless supply of stories of friends, experiences and scrapes from the old days. Then there were the jokes told as only he could which often got better with each telling.

Micky always had such a cheerful optimistic outlook on life, it was a pleasure to be with him. We will truly miss him. Ken & Fran

I had the good fortune to stay with Mike and Agnes while visiting Nancy in BC several years ago. Mike took us fishing so I could catch my first rainbow trout. He cleaned it, froze it and wrapped it in newspaper for me so I could bring it back to Toronto on the plane. I will remember most his kindness, humour and warmth. Mike was a very special person and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

During our years at Shearwater Mickey and I never managed to serve together on the same squadrons, but our paths crossed frequently.

He helped to make Navalair what it was and what it will always be to all of those who served under her wing.."Our Place"! After attending his very moving service and celebration of his life with his family and friends,I passed over his special place at 1500 feet..rocked my wings and bid farewell with a "Bravo Zulu" from all of his old friends! I could see his smile and a thumbs up! "Happy landings" my friend and God bless! Al and Vi Whalley

Our father was the most amazing man I've ever known and I've always been so very, very proud to have him as my father. He placed family ahead of everything else and instilled family values in all of his children. He was kind, generous, compassionate and very, very principled. He loved to sit up and chat with his kids, a glass of red wine in hand. His sense of humour was unmatched by any and he could find humour in any given situation. I've always held my Dad up as the example by which to live my life. We all loved him to bits and will miss him completely. Fortunately, none of this was ever left unsaid and my Dad knew how much he was loved by his children, their spouses, the grandchildren and my Mom. Rest in peace our lovely father. You were a great, great man!

It is with heavy heart and great sadness that Lillian feel in the passing of Mikey. He introduced us to each other at the RCN Hospital in Halifax in 1951. Although not a really close friend he was always one of my favourite people and we loved to share an inside joke about that short hospital stay along with Zock Cant and Bob (Suds)Sutherland.

Thumbs up Mick!

Truly one of the finest gentleman that it has been my pleasure to know and a great representaives of Canadian Naval Air. He will be sorely missed especially at the annual CNAG reunions that he rarely missed. Our deepest sympathy to Agnes and all her family on behalf of all CNAG members.

Another chapter of Naval Air History closed, Mick was a wonderful comrade and messmate and went on to an outstanding career in computers. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. I have just returned from visiting Don Rubin in Roseway Hospital in Shelburne, NS and he was saddened to hear of Micky's passing. They were the same age. Condolences to Agnes and the family from Don and I.

Mick's sense of humour, ready wit and professionalism were his hallmarks. Mick and friend Fred Lucas, two of the best kind, come immediately to mind when I think of Pat Bay in 67/68 where we served together in VU 33.

My first encounter with Mike was when I joined 826 Squadron of Avengers and he was the engine man on ABD with T.A. Wilaon as the airframe guy. Jack Cairney was the Observer and Crawshaw the OM.

We were a good crew.

I never had any concerns about engine performance as Mike was a dedicated professional technician.

Now a quiet "Run Ashore" was another matter.!!!!!!!!

The story that I like best is that about his visit with Frank Dowdall to Trooper Owens grave in France and spent the night afterwards in a Women's residence before returning to his ship in the UK. He didn't tell me of any other details.!!!!!!

God Love your Soul Mike, you were one of the best, and God Bless your dear Agnes and your entire Family.

Mike was not a close friend, but was a dear friend. He was a legend within the Naval Air circles, who played hard, but worked harder at his profession. I enjoyed every minute that I worked with him. His technical expertise, fairness, loyalty to his subordinates and peers were a standard that many of us tried to emulate. He will be dearly missed. My deepest sympathy, Agnes, to you and your family.
